Polestar Posts Lowest Monthly US Sales This Year, Motor Intelligence Data Show

Geely-backed premium brand Polestar sold 375 electric vehicles in the United States in September, according to sales estimates published by Motor Intelligence.

Sales dropped 34.2% from August’s 570 units and plunged 65.9% from the 1,100 vehicles sold a year earlier in September 2024.

Based on sales estimates, September saw Polestar‘s lowest monthly results of the year, contradicting the trend where the final month of a quarter typically sees the highest registration figures.

Polestar sold 4,767 vehicles in the US market from January 1 to September 30, meaning registrations in the first eight months of the year were down by 16.8% year over year (from 5,733 units).

With 542 vehicles registered in July and 570 in August, the total sales for the third quarter reach 1,487 units.

It was the lowest quarter so far this year, representing a 37.5% decline compared to the same quarter last year.

Third-quarter sales estimates for Polestar contradict the expected surge in demand ahead of the $7,500 EV tax credit deadline on September 30.

Last month, according to Motor Intelligence, which separates “cars” from “trucks,” Polestar sold 4 Polestar 2 sedans and 371 Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 SUVs.

The brand removed the option to configure a Polestar 2 from its US website earlier this year, as uncertainty grew around auto tariffs announced by Donald Trump.

The Polestar 2 model is currently only available in the country as pre-owned units, as inventory units have sold out.

The EV maker unveiled the Polestar 4 SUV in late 2023, with deliveries starting in Europe in the third quarter of 2024. Orders for the SUV opened in the US in April 2024, however the brand never delivered the model in the country.

In early June, the Gothenburg-headquartered brand opened orders for the 2026 Polestar 4 in the United States, with a starting price of $56,400, and informed customers that previous orders would be updated for this iteration, with the price remaining unchanged.

Deliveries are planned to begin over the next few months.

Prices for the Polestar 3 were cut by $10,000 in the US, currently starting at $57,500. The company led by Michael Lohscheller began deliveries of the Polestar 3 model in the US and Canada last October.

Customers who chose to purchase the Polestar 3 SUV had a 0% interest rate on contracts with a term of up to 72 months, an offer previously introduced in July that was renewed during August.

Up until the end of September — when the EV tax credit was scheduled to end — customers could receive a $15,000 Clean Vehicle Incentive, the double of the $7,500 state credit.

As we enter the final quarter, the brand is extending its Clean Vehicle Incentive program for the Polestar 3 with tailored offers.

Customers who choose to purchase through finance can benefit from a 0% APR (Annual Percentage Rate) along with a $7,500 incentive, while those making a cash purchase can be qualified for a $10,000 incentive.

When leasing, customers can take advantage of an $18,000 incentive.
Lease is also available with $0 due at signing, from $699 per month.

All these incentives are available through November 2.

A month after debuting its Polestar 5 model at the IAA Auto Show in Munich, the brand unveiled on Wednesday an upgraded version of the Polestar 3 SUV.

However, the 2026 version will initially only be available in the UK, as it is set to be expanded in other markets later on.
