XPeng’s Head of Autonomous Driving, Li Liyun, tested the latest version of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software in Los Angeles, comparing it to XPeng’s tech. The Guangzhou-based carmaker has recently ditched LiDAR, opting for an end-to-end vision solution — just like Tesla.
Testing the version 13.2, the executive drove a Model 3 sedan in Los Angeles. The test coincided with California’s recent tragic wildfires, which Li noted reduced road activity, limiting opportunities to test the software in LA’s normal traffic conditions.
Li pointed out that Tesla’s FSD does not handle certain situations typical of Chinese roads, such as U-turns, roundabouts, and interactions with three-wheeled vehicles, often requiring manual intervention.
“Roads in the U.S. are more structured and less crowded,” Li said while noting Tesla’s FSD adopts a more assertive approach in the U.S., including an aggressive “hurry mode,” while XPeng’s software is designed for more intricate road conditions and traffic interactions found in China.
Commenting on the post, the brand’s CEO Xiaopeng He said “The latest V13.2 version has indeed made significant improvements” after he tested Version 12 last year. The CEO sees both companies’ autonomous driving technologies “progressing side by side and are evenly matched.”
According to the carmaker, the company has a penetration rate in urban areas of 99% among owners of its recently launched sedan P7+.
Here’s the video shared by XPeng’s executive on Weibo.
According to data shared earlier this Tuesday by the carmaker Li Auto, XPeng‘s registrations increased to 7,400 units between January 6 and 12 — up from 7,000.
The figures include 4,300 units of the company’s best selling model, the Mona M03 sedan (4.9% week over week), and 1,950 units of the XPeng P7+, down 3.9% from the first week of the year.
