XPeng Spotted Testing Hybrid MPV Across Several EU Markets Ahead of Local Launch

XPeng is preparing to launch a hybrid version of its X9 multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in China later this month. The arrival on the European continent will follow, although details remain unknown.

Several images shared on Chinese social media on Thursday showed that XPeng has been testing the upcoming extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) at multiple locations across Europe.

“The new XPeng X9 spotted at a gas station in Germany,” known Weibo user ’42号车库’ wrote, adding that the model is “expected to be available both in China and abroad.”

Other users have published images of the extended-range vehicle refueling in both Italy and Sweden.

The vehicles featured a temporary license plate, as the company tests the MPV model across Europe.

Last week, the YouTuber Bjørn Nyland shared a video of the X9 charging at an Ionity station in Norway, suggesting ongoing testing activity in the country.

When releasing the refreshed version of the electric MPV in mid April, the company announced it as a global product.

The model is already present in several Asian markets, including Thailand, Hong Kong and Malaysia — where it was the best-selling model in its segment last month.

However, XPeng has not yet confirmed the timeline for the release of the electric X9 or any hybrid models in Europe.

Unlike Chinese EVs, which have faced import tariffs in Europe since late last year, hybrid vehicles are exempt from these taxes.

This exemption allows Chinese automakers to sell hybrids in Europe without incurring additional costs.

To bypass tariffs on fully electric vehicles, XPeng has begun local production in Austria through a collaboration with Magna Steyr.

The X9 multi-purpose van (MPV) will be the company’s first model with a hybrid powertrain, after only producing battery electric vehicles for over a decade.

On Tuesday, battery and consumption details for the model have been leaked on Chinese social media.

The information was released on the MIIT’s New Energy Vehicle Declaration List.

The X9 MPV will feature a 63.3 kWh battery, with an all-electric range of 345 km (214.4 miles).

The vehicle is expected to have a fuel consumption of 6.4 L/100 km (about 36.8 miles per gallon) while in charge-sustainable mode.

The fully electric X9 starts from 399,800 yuan ($56,000) in China, and is a best-seller in the segment in countries such as Hong Kong, Thailand and Malaysia, according to XPeng.

After revealing that it will also produce an EREV version of the G7 SUV, the brand has also filed for range-extended electric versions of its P7+ sedan and G6 SUV in China.
