XPeng Ends Pure EV Era With First-Ever Extended-Range Model Filing

Chinese carmaker XPeng launched a revamped version of its X9 MPV in April but made no mention at the time of a range-extended variant.

The Guangzhou-based brand, which has produced only fully electric models since its founding nearly 11 years ago, is now preparing to add the new version to its line-up.

On Friday, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology published its latest product catalogue, which includes the XPeng X9 range-extended MPV, officially described as a “plug-in range-extended hybrid multi-purpose passenger vehicle.”

According to the filing, the vehicle measures 5,316 mm in length, 1,988 mm in width and 1,785 mm in height, with a 3,160 mm wheelbase.

It is fitted with a lithium iron phosphate battery from CALB, a drive motor rated at 110 kW with a peak output of 210 kW, and an engine with a maximum net power of 110 kW.

An image of what appeared to be the extended-range X9 had surfaced in early April, showing the model refuelling in Guangzhou, where XPeng is headquartered.

XPeng confirmed the model’s development on Friday, stating: “XPeng X9 Super Electric is here!” The company said it deployed more than 1,000 test vehicles, spent over 800 days in trials, covered 20 countries and 330 cities, and accumulated more than 20 million kilometres of testing mileage.

When unveiling the second-generation X9 in April, XPeng said the new version would reach “select regions” in Europe in the second half of this year, with “further expansion into additional countries” to follow.

XPeng claims the model is the most efficient MPV on the market, consuming 16.2 kWh per 100 km, and can add 1 km of range per second, charging from 10% to 80% in just 12 minutes.

XPeng aims to reach 60 markets by year-end, doubling the number of countries it was present in by late last year.
