XPeng Launches Hybrid Version of X9 MPV with 1,000 Miles Total Range

XPeng opened orders on Thursday for its first hybrid model as the Chinese carmaker starts production of its first ever hybrid vehicles.

The extended-range X9 multi-purpose van features a Max and an Ultra version, with pre-sales starting from 350,000 yuan ($49,100) and 370,000 yuan ($51,900), respectively.

The official launch is scheduled to take place later this month, however, no specific date was revealed.

The vehicle can reach up to 1,600 km (about 1,000 miles), of which 472 km (293 miles) are pure electric range.

It supports 5C fast charging, and is equipped with three AI Turing in-house developed chips.

According to XPeng, customers who pay a 99 yuan (about $13) reservation fee can get 5,000 yuan ($700) off the final price.

The brand is offering the Starry Floating Wheels and the Cabin Upgrade Package for free until the launch of the vehicle.

At the same time, X9 owners who choose to trade their fully electric vehicle for the extended range version can benefit from an offer of 10,000 yuan ($1,400).

The hybrid X9 “has undergone global road testing, covering 330 cities across 20 countries and traveling 20 million kilometers,” according to the company on Weibo.

Last month, several images shared on Chinese social media showed that the company also tested the model at multiple locations across Europe.

However, XPeng has not yet confirmed the timeline for the release of the electric X9 or any hybrid models in Europe.

Hybrid G7, G6 and P7+ to Follow

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has revealed that the brand is also planning to launch hybrid versions of three additional models in its lineup.

The extended-range version of the XPeng G7, which launched as a fully electric vehicle in July, was first reported in September.

The fully electric G7 SUV is priced between 195,800 and 225,800 yuan ($27,300–$31,500). The launch — and pricing — details for the hybrid version remain unknown.

A month later, a new MIIT catalogue showed that the cheapest G6 SUV and the more recent P7+ sedan will also be featured with hybrid powertrains.

Hybric Technology Unveil

The Guangzhou-based company only produced fully electric models since its inception 11 years ago.

Then, exactly a year ago, at its 2024 AI Day, XPeng unveiled its hybrid technology — the Kunpeng Super Extended-Range System.

By then, the CEO told media outlet Daily Economic News that “if a company wants to enter the global market, new energy replenishment methods are needed, including extended-range hybrid systems.”

According to the brand, its research found that there was a 90% difference between extended-range and pure electric user needs.

XPeng must be prepared to enter different countries and regions, providing more convenient and universal energy replenishment solutions,” He said.
