Audi Announces A2 e-tron Entry-Level EV With First Design Teaser

Audi confirmed on Tuesday that it will bring back the A2 nameplate for a new all-electric compact model family, marking the first time the name has appeared in the automaker’s lineup in more than two decades.

The A2 e-tron will be manufactured at Audi’s headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany, with a world premiere scheduled for autumn this year.

CEO Gernot Döllner announced the model at Audi‘s Annual Media Conference, calling it the brand’s entry point into electric mobility.

“We’ve listened. Our customers want electric mobility that impresses in everyday life,” Döllner said. “The A2 e-tron is our promise to deliver exactly that — efficient, compact, and confident.”

The announcement was accompanied by a teaser showing the vehicle’s silhouette.

No specifications, pricing, or battery details were disclosed.

Autumn Debut

Audi confirmed the name, the production location, and the autumn reveal date.

It described the A2 e-tron as targeting “a broad international customer base that values everyday usability in the city, sustainability, high efficiency, and digital connectivity.”

The company said the name is “a deliberate nod” to the original Audi A2, which was produced from 1999 to 2005 and pioneered lightweight aluminium construction and aerodynamic efficiency in a compact package.

Beyond that, Audi disclosed nothing about the platform, powertrain, battery capacity, range, pricing, or interior.

Döllner positioned the model alongside the full-size Q9 SUV as one of two strategic bookends for 2026.

“The focus is on two product lines that strategically perfect the portfolio at the top end and at the entry point,” Audi said.

What Prior Reporting Has Indicated

Autocar, which first reported the A2 name revival in February, said the vehicle will be based on Volkswagen Group‘s MEB electric platform and will sit close in size and specification to the Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback.

The British publication, citing senior sources within the company, said the A2 e-tron will have a crossover-influenced design with MPV elements, giving it a profile that closely resembles the original A2’s distinctive one-box silhouette.

Test prototypes have been spotted on multiple occasions throughout 2025 and early 2026, including at the Nürburgring and during winter testing in Sweden.

Pricing has not been confirmed by Audi but is expected to start from approximately €35,000 in Germany and around £30,000 in the UK, making it the brand’s most affordable EV model.

European deliveries are anticipated from early 2027. A US launch has not been confirmed.

EV Lineup

Audi‘s current all-electric lineup spans from the compact to the full-size segment.

The Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron, built on the MEB platform, serve as the brand’s current entry-level electric SUVs, with US pricing starting at approximately $49,800.

Above them sit the Q6 e-tron and SQ6 e-tron, built on the newer PPE platform developed jointly with Porsche, offering 800-volt charging architecture and up to 321 miles of EPA range.

The A6 e-tron and S6 e-tron — also on the PPE platform — provide a sedan and estate alternative, with the A6 Sportback achieving up to 392 miles of EPA range in rear-wheel-drive configuration.

At the top of the range, the e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT performance sedans round out the portfolio.

The Q8 e-tron, which served as Audi‘s flagship electric SUV, was discontinued in early 2025 following the closure of the Brussels assembly plant.

The forthcoming Q9, announced alongside the A2 e-tron at Monday’s media conference, will serve as the new top end of the lineup.
