Tesla Leads March EV Sales in Spain, Netherlands, and Nordic Markets

Tesla is leading electric vehicle registrations in March across the five European countries that report daily figures, such as Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.

As of March 28, Tesla registered 6,175 units sold, according to daily registration data. That gives the U.S. automaker a 14.7% market share, ahead of Volkswagen’s 13.7% and Volvo’s 6.5%.

While the March data is not yet complete, Tesla’s current tally is sharply lower compared to the same month in 2024, when it registered 11,940 vehicles and held a commanding 26.9% share.

Still, the Tesla Model Y remains the region’s top-selling EV this month, with 3,604 registrations — more than any other model and nearly double the volume of the third-place Kia EV3, which posted 1,852 units. Tesla also holds second place with the Model 3 at 2,550 units.

The year over year decline in the first quarter comes amid the transition to the refreshed Model Y and concerns over CEO Elon Musk’s growing political presence, particularly his role in U.S. politics and involvement in Germany’s recent elections. In February, Tesla registrations fell 76% in the German market to 1,429 units.

In March 2024, the Model Y reached 7,913 registrations, with the Model 3 at 3,877 — both notably higher than current levels, though full March 2025 data has not yet been finalized.

Additionally, Tesla is currently clearing inventory of the previous-generation Model Y while ramping up production of the updated version at its four global factories.

Volkswagen, which had 3,479 registrations in March 2024, has nearly matched that figure already this year with 5,739 units as of March 28, narrowing the gap with Tesla. The German automaker placed four models among the top 10 sellers this month — the ID.4 (1,657 units), ID.Buzz (1,469), ID.7 (1,347), and ID.3 (1,178).

Other brands gaining ground include Kia, with 2,654 units so far in March 2025 compared to 2,291 in the full month last year. Volvo trails its 2024 total of 5,256 registrations with 2,745 units as of March 28.

Earlier Friday, Tesla published its company-compiled consensus for first-quarter global deliveries, indicating that Wall Street analysts expect the automaker to deliver an average of 377,592 vehicles.

The figure, based on estimates from 27 analysts, would mark Tesla’s weakest quarterly performance since the third quarter of 2022, when it delivered 343,830 vehicles. On a year-over-year basis, the projected total reflects a 2.4% decline.

In China, Tesla registered about 17,000 vehicles last week, up 11% week over week as it continues the Model Y ramp up.

On the last day of January, the company confirmed the refreshed version of the world’s best selling car in 2024 — was being produced across four factories in Fremont, California; Austin, Texas; Grünheide near Berlin; and Shanghai.
