Tesla Enables Cybertruck Powershare With Powerwall 3

Tesla began enabling Cybertruck PowerShare with Powerwall on Thursday, nearly three years after announcing the feature with the truck, for owners of the Powerwall 3 who complete an opt-in survey, with compatibility for the Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ pushed to later this year.

The Cybertruck account posted on X, “Powerwall 3 & I can now power your house together. This extends your home backup by over 3 days, equivalent to 9 additional Powerwalls.”

The account added in its thread that “Powerwall 2+ compatibility coming later this year.”

The video attached to the posts shows the Tesla app during a grid outage: the Cybertruck supplying 11.5 kW at 80% charge, the home drawing 3.0 kW, solar contributing 1.0 kW, the grid at zero, and the Powerwall at 9.5 kW with a rising arrow at 19%, which is the truck recharging the home battery while the grid is down.

The status line reads “Cybertruck is providing backup power” with more than 24 backup hours remaining, and a “System Power Limit” panel shows 2.0 kW in use against a maximum of 11.5 kW.

Shortly after the post, Tesla began emailing Cybertruck owners with Powerwall 3 systems. The email, titled “Now Available: Powershare Home Backup” and posted by Tesla investor and content creator Sawyer Merritt, reads: “Powershare Home Backup is now available with your Powerwall system and Cybertruck. This feature allows you to extend your home backup duration during an outage, using your vehicle’s battery. To confirm your interest and enable this feature, complete the survey below.” Merritt wrote that Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ compatibility “will launch in late 2026.”

Owners who checked their trucks between the posts and the email found the message “Powershare is not yet enabled for Powerwall owners.” Enablement is therefore gated behind the survey and staged by site rather than switched on over the air for every eligible home at once.

What the Pairing Needs

The configuration is a Powerwall 3 system with backup, through a Gateway 3, Backup Gateway 2 or Backup Switch, and a Gen 3 or Universal Wall Connector on a backed-up circuit, with the truck and app on current software.

No Powershare Gateway is required or permitted, since Tesla’s installation documents instruct installers not to fit one to a Powerwall system.

The truck keeps an owner-set discharge reserve for driving, and only the energy above it is available to the house. Grid-support and virtual-power-plant credits continue to come from the Powerwall alone, with no co-optimisation of the pair, according to Tesla’s product pages as read by owners on Thursday.

The Two Numbers

Both figures in Tesla’s post are arithmetic on the Cybertruck’s pack of about 123 kWh and Tesla’s assumption of 30 kWh of household consumption a day.

Nine Powerwall 3s hold 121.5 kWh at 13.5 kWh each, which is the “9 additional Powerwalls.” Three days at 30 kWh is 90 kWh, which is the “over 3 days,” and leaves reserve in the pack.

Tesla’s Powershare page has claimed “over three days” for the truck alone on the same assumption since 2023, so the release restates the truck’s figure as an extension of the Powerwall’s run time, which at 30 kWh a day is about eleven hours for a single unit.

They are energy figures, not power figures.

The truck’s Powershare output is limited to 11.5 kW, 48 amps at 240 volts, the same as a single Powerwall 3, and its motor-starting current is 110 amps against the Powerwall 3’s 185.

The app screen in Tesla’s own video shows a system power limit of 11.5 kW with the truck, the Powerwall and solar all present, which is the only figure Tesla has given for the pair and indicates the sources share a single ceiling rather than adding their outputs.

On the same screen, the truck is recharging the Powerwall at 9.5 kW while the house takes 3 kW, so the truck can refill the home battery during an outage as well as carry the load. The truck lengthens an outage the house can survive. It does not change what the house can run at once, and it contributes nothing when it is away from the driveway.

The Delay

Powershare was announced with the Cybertruck on November 30, 2023, with three functions. Powering tools and appliances from the truck’s outlets, up to 9.6 kW, has worked since launch.

Powering a house through an outage at up to 11.5 kW has worked since 2024 for owners who installed a Powershare Gateway and a Universal Wall Connector, and since March 2025 for homes with solar in the backup circuit.

Powering a house behind a Powerwall, so the home battery discharges first and the truck serves as extended storage, is the function released on Thursday.

Owners were told to expect it by late 2024.

In March 2025 Tesla said Powerwall owners with a Gen 3 or Universal Wall Connector would have it in the third quarter of 2025. On December 11, 2025 Tesla emailed owners that the feature was “still in development and is now scheduled for release in mid-2026,” citing the need to test “many configurations and generations of Powerwall.” In May 2026 a customer ordering solar with Powershare was told the two were incompatible and his order would be cancelled.

On August 23 Wes Morrill, the Cybertruck’s lead engineer, told an owner on X that he would “provide an update when there is something new to share,” as EV reported.

Three days later a decompile of Tesla app version 4.60.0 showed the feature’s code, including a standby state in which the truck waits for the Gateway to detect an outage.

Foundation Series buyers, who collected trucks in 2023 and 2024, paid for Powershare hardware on the understanding it would work with the Powerwalls many of them owned.

Morrill described the difficulty in December: “two grid forming devices need to negotiate who will form and who will follow” according to each one’s state of charge. The truck’s onboard bidirectional inverter and the Powerwall’s inverter each form a microgrid when the grid is down, and the software has to decide which leads.
