The weekly insurance registrations from China were released on Tuesday with BYD reaching a new record of 88,800 new energy vehicles (NEVs) registered — up from 87,800 units in the previous week.

Tesla’s registrations rose slightly (1.4 per cent) from 14,200 to 14,400 units, with the Model 3 making up 2,100 of those and the Model Y — whose upgraded version is reportedly set for release next year — accounting for 12,300 units.

The figures cover the period between August 26 until the first day of September 25 with the NEV penetration rate in China surpassing the 50% milestone again.

After having rebounded in the previous week, the registrations from the NEV maker Li Auto saw a 3 per cent decline to 11,300 units. The brand delivered 48,000 vehicles in August, slightly below its all-time record of 51,000 units reached in July.

The brand was followed by Aito, which is backed by China’s giant Huawei, with 8,900 units. Aito will release on September 10 the 5-seater version of its SUV M9.

The Stellantis-backed Leapmotor registered 7,000 vehicles and Nio followed with 6,000 units — up 30% from the previous week. The figures represent the second consecutive week of growth for the company after having increased the registrations from 3,300 to 4,600 in the third week of August.

The company will start delivering the SUV L60, the first model under its sub-brand Onvo, later this month.

Geely’s premium EV brand Zeekr registered 4,590 vehicles in the last week of August, representing an increase of 53 per cent from the previous week.

After rising 22 per cent in the previous week, Xpeng registrations rose another 25 per cent in the last week of August to 3,500 vehicles.

The Guangzhou based manufacturer said on Monday it has secured over 50,000 orders for the recently launched Mona M03 model. The fully electric coupe starts at $16,800 in China and is expected to allow XPeng to reach over 20,000 monthly deliveries in September or October.
