A Rivian R1S has been photographed parked on a Ukrainian street on local plates, in a country where the company has never sold a vehicle, opened a service centre or announced any intention to do either.
The images were posted to the r/Rivian forum on Tuesday by the user ‘davbiepro’ who said the electric SUV was spotted in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.
The R1S carries KA 7429 YA, a Kyiv city code, and was photographed on Lypynskoho Street, about 300 miles from where it is registered.
The Claimed Pipeline
In an update posted several hours later, the original poster described a route from American salvage auctions into the Ukrainian market.
He wrote that a friend in Ukraine personally knows the people who bring Rivians from the United States, that the vehicles are bought at auction for around $15,000 after being written off, shipped over and rebuilt.
The user added that they sell locally for around $35,000 to $50,000 depending on the model. No documentation was offered to defend the statement.
Earlier in the same thread the poster had said that most American cars in Ukraine are totalled vehicles, and separately that domestic fuel prices are high enough to push buyers toward electric cars.
The Import Regime
Copart, the largest US salvage auction operator, maintains a dedicated Ukraine landing page, and a substantial industry of Ukrainian importers advertises purchasing, shipping and customs clearance from Copart and IAAI, with typical transit of 30 to 45 days.
From January 1, the simplified clearance and reduced rates previously available to private importers were withdrawn.
Standard rates now apply: 10% import duty, and 20% value-added tax calculated on customs value plus duty and excise.
Excise on an electric vehicle is levied at one euro per kilowatt-hour of battery capacity, which on an R1S pack of roughly 135 kilowatt-hours amounts to a negligible sum. A registration levy of 3% or 5% of declared value applies at first registration.
Ukraine has operated a value-added tax exemption on vehicles powered exclusively by an electric motor, which was due to expire on January 1, 2026. A draft law submitted to parliament in June 2025 proposed extending it to January 1, 2027.
No Network
Rivian operates no dealer, service centre or parts network anywhere in Europe for passenger vehicles.
Its European footprint consists of more than 300 electric delivery vans operated by Amazon since 2023, mobile technicians based in Munich to service that fleet, and software offices in London, Belgrade, and Lund.
American R1s use the CCS1 connector, or the North American Charging System on newer builds. European and Ukrainian public fast charging runs on CCS2.
Home charging on a 240-volt supply is straightforward with the right cable; high-power public charging is not, and no widely available CCS2-to-CCS1 adapter exists for DC fast charging.
Not the Only One
One commenter reported seeing a different Rivian in Lviv on the same day. Another said a Forest Green R1S on Ukrainian plates had been seen in Norway earlier this summer.
Neither is verified, and both are consistent with a small population of privately imported vehicles moving across borders.
A separate compilation of European sightings includes an R1T on Ukrainian plates photographed in Thessaloniki, Greece in September 2025, also unverified.
The company’s only documented working vehicle on the continent is a sensor-equipped R1T on Dutch plates, photographed mapping roads in Bolzano, Italy in July, gathering data for the autonomy stack the R2 will carry when it eventually launches there.
Rivian previously listed 2027 as its European launch year on its website. That date has been removed and not replaced.
