NIO’s Patents for the new Battery Swap Stations show considerable improvements

According to patents that have been recently granted to NIO related with its Battery Swap technology, the EV maker will make the replacements faster, increase the capacity at the facilities and increase its flexibility. In one of the patents, the inventor says the third generation of the Stations will allow users to swap the batteries in less than 3 minutes.

In the patents, it can be seen that NIO will apply several improvements in order to reduce the time spent by each user at the stations achieving. One of the measures to be used will be a simultaneous exchange between batteries, i.e. sending the used battery to a compartment while a charged one comes in.

In addition, each Station will have more slots and will be a lot more flexible: compatible with different brands of batteries, with different voltage batteries of the same brand, and with different wheelbase and wheelbase models.

There are also a different of battery layouts in the station with one of them allowing the battery compartment to be placed in the same direction as the car to avoid a 90-degree rotation of the Rail Guided Vehicle at a time.

In the summary of one relevant patent, NIO mentioned “the benefits of the power exchange system provided include: it has a large power battery capacity and a compact footprint, such as a footprint close to 3 parking spaces and a capacity of up to 11 power batteries. The power exchange time is shorter, for example, it can be less than 3 minutes; the transporter can also stack power batteries, which is low in cost and saves space; it provides the driver with enough space for the car”.

The previous generation was launched at NIO Day 2020 — held in January 9, 2021 — and allowed the vehicle to automatically park into the station, with which users can experience a three-minute battery swap while staying inside the vehicle.

Earlier this month, the EV maker announced that has reached a total of 10 million battery swaps four years after launching its first Battery Swap Station in China providing users with a cumulative mileage of more than 1.98 billion kilometers. The NIO user with the most battery swaps has been to 169 Stations and swapped the battery 1,364 times.

Recently, William Li reiterated the company’s goal of achieving 1,300 Battery Swap Stations worldwide by the end of the year and confirmed the plan to have a plant to build these facilities in Europe.
