EV maker Nio registered 25 vehicles in Germany in February, slightly below the 27 units recorded a year earlier, data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority showed on Wednesday.

Between January 1 and February 28, the company registered a total of 43 vehicles in Germany. The decline comes as Nio faces, since last September, a 20.7% tariff imposed by the European Commission on all EVs imported from China.

Last month, Nio announced that buyers of its ET5 and ET7 models in Germany will receive two years of free access to its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) program, covering up to 60,000 km or 200 battery swaps, if purchased by June 30.

Overall, sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Germany rose 30.8% year over year to nearly 36,000 units in February, while registrations of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles fell about 25%.

Tesla’s registrations fell over 70% to 1,429 as it prepares to start deliveries of the refreshed Model Y in Europe starting in May. Lucid Motors registered 9 vehicles and Polestar figures surged nearly 82% to 263 units.

In January, BEVs accounted for 16.6% of new registrations, reaching 34,498 units—a record high since the German government ended EV purchase incentives in late 2023. This represented a 53.5% increase from the same month last year.

Nio registered 398 vehicles in Germany in 2024, marking a 68% decline from the previous year.

Nio expanded to the German market in October 2022 and registered 1,263 units in 2023. Germany brought its EV subsidy program to an abrupt halt at the end of 2023 slowing down sales in 2024.

Globally, Nio delivered 9,143 electric vehicles under its main brand in February, a 12.4% increase from the 8,132 units registered a year ago.

Its first sub-brand, Onvo, delivered 4,049 units of its debut model taking Nio Group deliveries to a total of 13,192 vehicles, up 62% from a year ago.
