The Dutch platform ‘e-Drivers’ shared on Monday the winners of the 2024 ‘Electric Car of the Year’ with Nio seeing two of its models among the winners. The EV maker expanded to the Dutch market in October 2022 after entering the Europen market through Norway in late 2021.
The Nio ET5 Touring, the brand’s station wagon version of its ET5 sedan, won in both the ‘all classes’ category and the ‘mid-size class’ while the EL7 secured the first place in the top-class category.
“The strength of this election lies in the voice of the public: no expert jury or external influence, but the real experiences, preferences, and opinions of electric car drivers and enthusiasts determined the winners,” the platform explained during the announcement of the 2024 winners.
A total of 23,184 votes were cast in a competition evaluating 34 new electric vehicle (EV) models across multiple categories. Nio’s ET5 Touring won in the middle-class segment for EVs priced between €35,000 and €75,000, outscoring both its sibling model, the Nio EL6 SUV, and Volvo’s smallest and cheapest SUV, the EX30.
In the top-class category, the Nio EL7 secured a decisive victory with 12,397 votes, outperforming the Kia EV9, which received 4,669 votes, and the luxurious Lotus Eletre SUV, which garnered 3,703 votes.
In the compact EV category, reserved for models priced below €35,000, the Citroën e-C3 claimed the top spot with 9,177 votes, surpassing competitors such as the BYD Dolphin and the Peugeot e-208.
“Nio delivered an impressive performance during this election. With wins in the mid-size class, the luxury class, and the overall title, the brand has strengthened its position as a dominant player in the electric vehicle industry,” e-Drivers said in the release. “The ET5 Touring and EL7 convincingly captured the public’s hearts, highlighting Nio’s versatility and appeal. While the brand does not offer models in the compact class, its focus on outstanding performance in the mid-size and luxury segments is clearly paying off.”
The EV maker registered 11 vehicles in the Netherlands in November, the same as in October and the second-lowest monthly total for 2024, according to data from the Dutch Automotive Industry Association released in the first week of December.

The company registered five units of its ET5 sedan, the most affordable model in its lineup, four units of its smallest SUV, the EL6, and two units of its ET7 sedan. So far this year, Nio has registered a total of 243 units, covering both private and fleet customers.
The extra tariffs imposed by the European Commission on China-made electric vehicles became effective on October 30 with Nio facing a 20.7% duty on top of the already existing 10% tariff. So far, the company has not increased prices across its five European markets.
Tesla Model Y was the best selling model in the country with 1,867 units with Volvo’s smallest SUV EX30 following with 1,255 units registered. Tesla Model 3 followed with 1,004 units. The U.S. luxury EV manufacturer Lucid Motors recorded two vehicles, the same result achieved in October.
In mid-September, Nio announced a partnership with the Dutch online platform Blueplates, allowing taxi drivers and chauffeurs to rent the company’s flagship sedan ET7 in the country’s capital Amsterdam.
