Driving from China to Germany in an electric vehicle? Yes, it’s possible.

Aiming to arrive on time for the opening of Nio‘s showroom in the German city of Hamburg on June 20, a group of friends drove two Nio electric cars for over 10 thousand kilometers.

Shangxiang Xiang, Yihui Wang, Xindong Wang, Wei Gao, and Feng Cheng departure from China on May 6 [picture of the group in Hefei, Anhui Province below] and crossed Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Greece, Italy, and Austria before arriving in Germany with the SUVs Nio EL6 and Nio EL8.

“It was really a big adventure. Exhausting, but also very interesting. We wanted to test whether such a long journey was possible with our vehicles. For us, it’s a kind of scientific business trip. Hamburg and the ‘Nio House’ are beautiful. We are glad to have made this long tour. But we will fly back,” said Feng Cheng to local media.

In Europe, and besides Hamburg, the group also visited Nio’s showrooms in Berlin, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Düsseldorf, and Utrecht, in the Netherlands.

Spanning 1,294 square meters and designed by the architectural firm 1zu33, Nio’s new showroom in Germany draws inspiration from Hamburg’s iconic red bricks and historic bridges that combine with clean lines to integrate elements of local architecture into the space.

For the first time in Europe, the showroom — as Nio calls them, Nio House — incorporates Senso plant-based resin floors, reducing CO2 emissions by 96 percent.
