Lucid Exec Confirms Plans for 2nd Production Shift Despite EV Industry Pullback

Electric vehicle maker Lucid Motors confirmed on Thursday it will soon add a second production shift at its Arizona plant, despite the EV industry pullback after the $7,500 EV credit deadline.

The statement was made just a few hours after Rivian — another US EV maker — announced its second workforce reduction in less than two months (and the fifth one in under two years).

Last week, GM warned of a $1.6 billion impairment driven by the reshape of its EV strategy after the tax credit expiration.

Replying to an X user who questioned if Lucid was “sure that [the ]2nd shift will be implemented” after Rivian‘s news, the company’s Head of of Global Communications Nick Twork reiterated the plan.

The second manufacturing shift was announced earlier this month on LinkedIn by interim Chief Executive Officer Marc Winterhoff, who said the company aims “to finish 2025 strong.”

Last week, Twork wrote on X that the “second shift at AMP-1 hasn’t yet started,” without giving a specific date for the start of production.

Lucid is expanding its manufacturing staff at its AMP-1 (as it is known internally). As of October 17, it had 85 job positions listed for the division at the Casa Grande site.

The manufacturing plant in Arizona builds the Air luxury sedan and began producing the Gravity SUV earlier this year.

The facility also produces “semi-knockdown” (SKD) vehicles that are shipped to Saudi Arabia, where Lucid‘s AMP-2 plant in King Abdullah Economic City for final assembly.

Lucid produced a record 3,891 Air and Gravity vehicles in the third quarter.

Winterhoff congratulated the manufacturing team, “despite facing supply constraints, including magnet shortages, and other unexpected challenges.”

Additionally, more than 1,000 partially assembled units were shipped to Saudi Arabia for final assembly.

Those vehicles will be included in Lucid’s fourth quarter production figures.

Production figures total 9,966 units in the first nine months of the year, however, which means Lucid only reached 55.4% of its annual production guidance of between 18,000 and 20,000 units.

The target was trimmed in early August to include a lower end target, from the previously expected 20,000 units “approximately.”

The EV maker would need to fully produce between 8,034 and 10,034 vehicles in the fourth quarter alone to reach the guidance.

Lucid Motors will report third-quarter earnings on November 5.

On Monday, the company announced a new marketing partnership with New York Knicks players Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart, as the EV maker continues efforts to increase brand awareness and demand.
