Earlier this month, former Formula One World Champion Nico Rosberg visited Shanghai to test several local electric vehicles (EVs).

By then, Rosberg expressed his admiration for the quality and technological advancements of these vehicles, describing his experience as “super impressed”.

In a new post on LinkedIn this Wednesday, Rosberg singled out the Luxeed S7, developed by Chinese tech giant Huawei and Chery Auto, and the Xiaomi SU7 as the most notable local EVs he tested.

Rosberg, who retired from racing in 2016, further commented on his experience: “I recently posted about my trip to Shanghai, where I tested several Chinese EVs, most notably the Huawei Luxeed S7 and Xiaomi SU7, that are currently making massive waves in the industry,” Rosberg said.

Here’s the video posted by Rosberg on Linkedin.

The Xiaomi EV he tested, Rosberg noted, closely resembles a Porsche Taycan in appearance but comes at a fraction of the cost. “You can add 220 km of range in just 5 minutes of charging,” he added. He also praised the luxurious interiors and highlighted the vehicle’s integration with home appliances, enhancing its role as an extension of a smart home.

Rosberg was particularly impressed by the EVs’ autonomous driving capabilities, boasting a reaction time of 2.95 seconds, quicker than a human’s 3 seconds.

“While Chinese EVs are advancing rapidly, it’s important to note that European automakers, particularly in Germany, have also made significant strides. There are multiple German EVs with a range of 600+ km, proving the technology is there (as well as the premium quality). However, it just needs to be established for more affordable models,” he concluded.

The Smartphone giant delivered 8,630 vehicles in May, its second month of production. The result represents a 22.3 percent growth from April as the company introduces double shifts aiming to surpass 10 thousand units in June.

The first model of the smartphone giant is being positioned as a competitor to the Tesla Model 3, with the company committing to a $10 billion investment in its EV project over the next decade aiming to enter the top 5 of global automakers.
