XPeng said on Monday it signed a memorandum of understanding with Volkswagen Group China to jointly build more than 20,000 charging piles creating “one of the largest super-fast charging networks in China.”
The charging network will be co-operated by both companies, though they have not disclosed a timeline for achieving the 20,000-pile target. In 2023, Volkswagen Group announced it had acquired a 4.99% stake in the Chinese EV maker.
“Combining the technological advantages in high-power liquid-cooled super-fast charging as well as the broad and complementary coverage of both parties in China, customers of both parties will have the opportunity to enjoy the superior fast charging experience across China,” XPeng said in a statement.
In April last year, XPeng had announced the expansion of its partnership with the German giant to jointly develop E/E Architecture for Volkswagen’s EV platform for China.
In 2023, both carmakers announced a “master agreement on platform and software strategic technical collaboration” aiming to reduce costs.
Xpeng’s “highly integrated” E/E architecture facilitates Gigabit Ethernet high-speed data transmission between the central domain and ADAS domain controllers. The Architecture supports “highly efficient whole-vehicle OTA for both customers’ vehicles and vehicles at the end of manufacturing lines”, Xpeng stated.
