XPeng Unveils Luxurious 6-Seat SUV GX to Rival Nio ES9, Zeekr 9X

Chinese automaker XPeng revealed on Thursday its first flagship three-row SUV, the GX.

The new model — which is scheduled to be launched “in the months ahead”— has been undergoing road testing in China for the past several months.

In a social media post, the brand’s founder and CEO He Xiaopeng described the three-row SUV as “an AI-powered, new-luxury flagship six-seat SUV.”

Internally codenamed G01, the model is set to compete with premium rivals including the upcoming Nio ES9 and the recently launched Zeekr 9X.

When asked about the GX’s rationale, He Xiaopeng said that extensive user research showed persistent issues in existing three-row SUVs, including “having no room left for luggage” when all seats are occupied and the vehicles “[feeling] bulky and difficult to drive.”

Therefore, XPeng aimed to resolve the “impossible triangle” of these types of units — “comfort, space, and handling” — with the GX, the CEO stated.

The Guangzhou-based automaker opted to change the model’s names from G01 to GX, since the “X” represents the “exploration of the unknown in mobility”, as well as “the technology DNA at the core of XPeng (X-tech),” according to Xiaopeng.

The company has not specified the powertrain configurations for the new SUV, built on XPeng‘s latest SEPA (Smart Electric Platform Architecture) 3.0 physical AI vehicle architecture.

However, it is expected to be offered in both extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) variants.

The new architecture is present in the brand’s BEV and EREV versions of its newly-launched models in China, including the X9 MPV — the fully electric version will debut in the UK “mid-year” —, the P7+ sedan, and the G7 mid-sized SUV.

The XPeng GX will feature an AI-powered chassis with steer-by-wire and rear-wheel steering, for enhanced agility and stability beyond conventional large vehicles, making it suitable for both “daily city commuting or long family trips”, the CEO mentioned.

The company has not disclosed any pricing or size details yet. However, as it will be positioned above the G9, the GX is expected to be priced between 400,000 and 500,000 yuan — a range of $57,600 and $72,000.

Other Six-Seat SUVs

With its new GX model, XPeng will soon enter the competitive market of six-seat SUVs in China.

In 2025, several three-row SUVs were launched in the world’s largest EV market, such as the new-generation Nio ES8, the L90 under Nio‘s sub-brand Onvo, the Li Auto i8, the Tesla Model Y L, and the Zeekr 9X.

Local media outlets reported last August that the China-exclusive version of the Model Y received 40,000 orders on its first day.

Meanwhile, the ES8 SUV secured more than 100,000 orders a few days after launch, with Nio‘s website showing delivery waiting times of six months.

The Zeekr 9x, which was launched last September, achieved 30,000 cumulative deliveries on Wednesday.

Nio is set to launch the ES9 in April, a luxury three-row SUV that at nearly 5,400 mm in length will be among the largest SUVs on the Chinese market.

The model will have an average selling price of above 500,000 yuan, the management told Morgan Stanley last month.

XPeng Sales

Last year, XPeng delivered 429,445 vehicles, increasing its annual figures by 126% from 2024.

The Guangzhou-based company aims to sell between 550,000 and 600,000 units worldwide this year.

The brand announced last Sunday that it delivered 20,011 vehicles globally in the first month of 2026.

Figures fell 34.1% compared to January 2025, when XPeng recorded 30,350 registrations, marking the largest sales drop among Chinese automakers.
