XPeng Sales in Germany Hit New Record in March with 176 Units

Chinese carmaker XPeng registered 176 vehicles in Germany in March, hitting a new record for the second consecutive month. The Guangzhou-based manufacturer, which is expected to unveil its first-ever hybrid model later this month, expanded to the German market in May last year.

The Chinese EV maker sold a total of 432 vehicles in the first three months of the year.

XPeng is emerging as a competitor to Tesla in Europe, whose sales have been declining in recent months. In Germany, Tesla sales fell 42.5% year over year in March and 62.2% in the first quarter.

Meanwhile, Chinese automakers are gaining ground in the German market. BYD, which launched in Germany in late 2022 and sells also hybrid models, saw a sharp increase with 805 vehicles sold in March (+403% YoY). In the first quarter, the Shenzhen-based firm sold 1,225 units, +212% year over year.

Polestar also grew, delivering 357 units in March and totaling 855 for the quarter (+35.5%). Premium Chinese brand Nio registered 21 units in March (-56.5% YoY) and 64 for the quarter (-37.3%).

Europe Expansion

The brand entered Europe via Norway in 2021 and has since expanded to Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and several other markets. XPeng sold 87 vehicles last month in the Netherlands, a 6% decline year over year. The EV maker registered 246 vehicles in the Netherlands during the first quarter.

After being the first Chinese EV maker to reach 10,000 sales in Europe late last year, XPeng announced in February its expansion to Poland. The brand plans to double its presence from 30 to 60 markets by the year end.

XPeng Models

The brand counts on new models and facelifts to help achieve the goal, including its first plug-in hydrid model (PHEV). A recent report from the Chinese publication 36Kr states that XPeng is working on “at least” five range-extended models, including sedans and SUVs. Production is starting in the second half of the year and the models are set to debut between 2026 and 2027.

XPeng also filed a trademark application in China for ‘P7 Ultra’ in early March, suggesting that it’s following the steps of rival Xiaomi with its SU7.

In March, the company also introduced refreshed versions of its G6 and G9 SUVs in China. However, it remains unclear when these updated models will reach global markets.

Global Delivery Figures

On Tuesday, XPeng announced that it delivered 33,205 electric vehicles in March, exceeding its projected range of 30,197 to 32,197 units based on its quarterly forecast.

In the first quarter, the carmaker delivered a total of 94,008 vehicles, surpassing its previously stated guidance.

The carmaker’s founder He Xiaopeng said recently he is “confident” about more than doubling last year’s delivery figures, suggesting XPeng sales can surpass 380,000 units this year.

As of the moment of writing, XPeng is trading 1.94% lower in the pre-market session, at $20.71. The company’s U.S. listed shares surged 185% in the last twelve months.
