XPeng Names Refreshed X9 MPV First Model Targeting Global Markets

Chinese carmaker XPeng is holding its first global event next week, where it will officially launch the refreshed version of its multi-purpose van (MPV) X9.

The event will be held on April 15 in Hong Kong, marking the first time the brand is launching a model aimed at global markets.

The new version of the seven-seat MPV was unveiled earlier this week, with pre-orders opening immediately at a starting price of 399,800 yuan (approximately $54,400).

Compared to the first generation model, the 2025 version starts 40,000 yuan ($5,400) higher, equivalent to about 10%.

“The new X9 comes with hardware upgrades worth up to 80,000 yuan [$10,900] and incorporates a 35% refresh in design and components,” the company said in the unveiling event.

The revamped MPV uses an 800V system with energy consumption as low as 16.2 kWh/100km (about 3.84 miles per kWh). The model is avaiable in two different battery sizes — 94.8 kWh (LFP) and 105 kWh (NMC) — and comes in single or dual-motor variants.

The vehicle also features advanced intelligent driving with the in-house developed Turing AI system after the company ditched LiDAR last year. The brand also announced that older X9 models will also be able to upgrade several specs, with details to be revealed at the upcoming event.

Portfolio overseas

XPeng aims to reach 60 markets by year-end, doubling the number of countries it was present in by late last year. The company debuted in January the right-hand drive version of the X9 MPV at the Singapore Motor Show.

Earlier last month, the model was launched in Malaysia, making it the second Southeast Asian country to receive the MPV, after it launched in Thailand in February.

In Europe, the Guangzhou-based brand currently sells its G6 and G9 SUVs and its P7 sedan in several markets, having entered the old continent through Norway in 2021.

Last weekend, the company officially expanded to Poland, which now becomes XPeng’s largest market in Eastern Europe.

“Over the past 25 years, it has experienced sustained economic growth, making it one of the fastest-growing economies on the continent,” Alex Tang, Head of International Division of Sales and Service at XPeng stated in February.

The Chinese EV maker joined the UK market in February, with its first-generation G6 SUV, priced from £39,990. Last month, XPeng sold 36 units in the country.

The coupe SUV G6 was originally launched in China in June 2023. Last month, XPeng launched refreshed versions of its G6 and G9 SUVs domestically. The vehicles’ prices started lower than their first generation’s, as opposed to the X9.

Upcoming Models

XPeng is planning to enter the hybrid market later this year after having only developed fully electric models since its inception in 2014.

The company also filed a trademark for the “P7 Ultra” in China in early March, suggesting a potential high-performance variant of its P7 sedan. The move seems to echo Xiaomi’s recent debut of its SU7 electric vehicle.

The brand teased the exterior for a G7 model in late January, set to compete with Tesla’s refreshed Model Y. The vehicle is likely to launch by the end of June.

Q1 Results

Last week, the company said it delivered 33,205 vehicles in March, hitting the 30,000 unit mark for the fifth consecutive month and soaring 268% year over year. The Chinese brand delivered more than 94,000 vehicles in the first quarter, jumping over the company’s guidance of 91,000 to 93,000 units.

As of the time of writing, XPeng’s U.S.-listed shares are trading at $17.90, up 2.6%. The stock performance soared 115.2% over the last 12 months.
