XPeng May Sales Dip 10% in Germany After April Record

XPeng registered 186 vehicles in Germany last month, data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) showed on Tuesday.

The figures follow a record high of 207 vehicles registered in April by the Guangzhou-based brand. In May, registrations fell 10.1%.

The company, founded and led by He Xiaopeng, entered the German market exactly one year ago and has delivered 825 vehicles in the country so far this year.

The carmaker’s lineup in the country includes its two SUVs and the P7 sedan, which is priced from €49,600 ($56,250).

The G6 is the brand’s cheapest model, priced from €43,600 ($49,450), while the G9 SUV starts at €59,600 ($67,600).

XPeng sold 106 units in the Swedish market last month, surpassing 100 monthly units for the first time this year. In Norway, sales soared 338.9% to 316 vehicles. In the Netherlands, the brand registered 114 units last month — a 103.6% surge year over year.

XPeng delivered 33,525 vehicles in May, up 230% from a year earlier. As of the last day of May, the automaker had reached 42.8% of its annual target of 380,000 units delivered globally.

XPeng aims to double its presence to 60 markets by year-end. Last week, the brand announced expansion to Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia, less than two weeks after confirming the entry into Italy, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

Competitors

Volkswagen, the country’s best-selling brand, sold over 50,000 units last month in Germany, its home market. It is followed by BMW and Mercedes, with 20,354 and 21,788 units, respectively.

BYD led the market when it came to new energy vehicle (NEV) brands, with 1,857 hybrid and fully electric models sold during May.

The figures represent 824% growth year over year. BYD hit a record in monthly sales in Germany for the second consecutive month.

Last month, Tesla sold 1,210 vehicles, a 36.2% drop year over year. Registrations for the U.S. brand increased by 36.7% from April figures.

Sales continued to decline in Europe in the fifth month of 2025, however registrations soared 212.5% year over year in Norway.

Geely-backed Polestar sold 240 vehicles, down 21% month over month and 42% year over year. Premium brand Nio registered 22 vehicles in May, three more than in April but a sharp 37% drop compared to May 2024.

EV Adoption

In May, 239,297 vehicles were sold in the German market, with 43,060 of those being fully electric models.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) had a 18% market share in the country last month, 44.9% up from the same period last year.

Hybrid vehicles accounted for 38.5% of the market (92,171 units), from which 25,181 were plug-in hybrids (PHEV).

Internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles were the preferred choice among German consumers — representing 103,027 units out of the total. However, the market share for petrol and diesel engines have dropped 24.1% and 21.8%, respectively.
