XPeng G6 SUV Spotted Refueling in China Ahead of Range-Extended Launch

A camouflaged version of XPeng’s G6 equipped with a range extender has been spotted refueling at a gas station in China, indicating the company is preparing to expand its dual powertrain lineup across more models.

The photo, shared by an automotive blogger on the social media platform Weibo, shows the G6 prototype wrapped in heavy camouflage and stopped at a fueling station.

XPeng is expected to launch range-extended versions of several models later this year. While their arrival in Europe hasn’t been confirmed, it’s likely, as EU tariffs introduced last year only apply to fully electric vehicles.

Named “Kunpeng Super Electric System,” the system was announced late last year by the Guangzhou carmaker.

The system delivers up to 430 km of pure electric range and a total driving range exceeding 1,400 km, according to the company.

XPeng is planning at least five extended-range models, according to Chinese media outlet 36Kr, covering both sedans and SUVs, including variants of the G6 and the P7.

These new vehicles will be based on XPeng’s 800V platform and are scheduled to launch over the next two years, spanning the company’s E, F, and H platforms.

The G6 is the second XPeng model seen refueling in public this year. In March, just weeks before the revamped X9 MPV was unveiled at the company’s first global brand event in Hong Kong, a photo of a range-extended version of the van was shared also on Weibo.

At the 2025 X9 launch event, the brand has not commented on the extended range variant.

The updated X9 starts at 359,800 yuan ($50,100) in China, retaining the pricing of its first generation. The high-end variant is priced just under 420,000 yuan.

While XPeng decided against launching the first generation X9 in Europe, the refreshed model will debut in “select regions” across the continent in the second half of the year.

The brand hiked its annual hiring plans earlier this week from 6,000 to 8,000 people. The increase will send XPeng‘s total workforce to nearly 30,000.

The company, founded and led by He Xiaopeng, aims to reach 60 markets by year-end, doubling the number of countries it was present in by late last year.
