Xiaomi YU7 Beats Tesla Model Y as China’s Best-Seller in January

Xiaomi‘s YU7 was the best-selling vehicle in China last month, data released on Thursday by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) showed.

The tech giant’s second model accounted for 37,869 out of the total 39,002 units delivered by the brand in January, representing 97.1% of its sales.

The YU7 outsold its main competitor, the Tesla Model Y, by more than double (124.8%) in registrations.

Despite a slight 3.1% decrease from December, the SUV was “the sales champion” in China in January, as stated by Xu Jieyun, Xiaomi‘s General Manager of Public Relations.

The monthly figures of its debut SU7, however, plunged to the lowest level since launch.

With 1,133 SU7s recorded last month, the figures represented a 95.1% drop from a year ago and a 89.8% sequential decline, as the company prepares to launch a refreshed iteration of the sedan.

Competitors

Xiaomi‘s YU7 sales have been steadily growing since its debut in late June.

In December, the model ranked third among the country’s best-selling models, before ultimately jumping to first place in January.

The Geely Boyue L ranked second with 34,176 units, while its Geome Xingyuan model was third, with 29,007 vehicles.

On the other hand, Tesla‘s Model Y dropped to the twentieth position, achieving 16,845 deliveries in China last month — the lowest result since last February.

February 2025 marked its worst-ever result — at only 8,006 units — as production was disrupted for the Chinese New Year Holiday and as the company transitioned to the refreshed version of the model, for which deliveries began later that month.

January sales represented a 34.4% fall from January 2025, when the company sold 25,694 units.

Compared to December, the Tesla Model Y saw a 74.4% sales drop.

YU7 x Model Y

The Xiaomi YU7 debuted late last June, delivering 2,234 vehicles in the final days of the month.

Between June and August 2025, the Elon Musk-led company’s SUV reached 30,000 vehicles sold per month, while the YU7 surpassed the 10,000-unit mark for the first time in August.

At the same time, Tesla was beginning deliveries of its Model Y L, a third-row version of its best-selling model. In September, the US giant sold 51,173 units of the Model Y, more than double of Xiaomi YU7’s 22,369 registrations.

However, in October, the YU7 surpassed Model Y for the first time, with the two models having reached 33,662 and 19,488 deliveries in the country, respectively.

In the last two months of 2025, the Model Y returned to the lead, before Xiaomi‘s model outperformed it for a second time in January.

Xiaomi Sales in January

According to the latest data from CPCA, Xiaomi sold a total of 39,002 electric vehicles last month.

The Chinese tech giant had announced on the first day of February that it registered “over 39,000” vehicles in January.

The figures represented a 70.3% year over year surge and a 22.3% sequential decline, marking the company’s weakest result since last August.

The auto industry usually slows down at the beginning of each year, following higher demand by year-end.

This year, the brand aims to sell 550,000 EVs, up 34% from the 411,837 total deliveries in 2025.

Tesla Sales in China

In China, Tesla saw its retail sales fall 45.2% year-on-year to 18,485 units, according to the latest data from CPCA.

Compared to last December’s record-breaking 93,843 deliveries, the figures dropped 80.3%, marking the brand’s lowest result since November 2022.

According to data released by CPCA last week, Tesla China’s wholesale deliveries reached 69,129 units last month.

The combination of domestic sales and exports represented a 9.3% rise compared to January 2025; however, it marked a 28.9% decline from the 97,171 units delivered in December.
