Texas Police Department Deploys First 2026 Tesla Model Y Patrol Vehicles

The Murphy Police Department in Texas has received two 2026 Tesla Model Y patrol vehicles, marking what appears to be the first global deployment of the refreshed “Juniper” Model Y for law enforcement duty.

Unplugged Performance’s division specializes in transforming units from the Elon Musk-led company into turnkey police, emergency, and fleet vehicles.

In announcing the delivery, UP.FIT emphasized the operational advantages of the electric patrol vehicles for the Murphy Police Department.

“Purpose-built for patrol duty, these next-gen EVs bring enhanced officer safety, zero emissions, and dramatically lower operating costs to the streets of Murphy,” the subsidiary wrote on X.

Alongside the announcement, the division shared several new images of the delivery of the two midsize crossover SUVs for patrol.

Other Police Departments in the US

Murphy Police Department’s Model Y adoption marks Tesla‘s latest entry into US law enforcement.

Back in 2017, the Fremont Police Department in California purchased a Tesla Model S luxury sedan to be used for patrol duty, which became the first Tesla police car in the world.

The past two years saw strong Tesla adoption among American law enforcement agencies.

In July 2024, the Irvine Police Department in California announced that it would add a Tesla Cybertruck to its fleet.

Three months later, it was unveiled and had its public debut. The force became the first one to officially integrate this model into its operations.

Also in July 2024, South Pasadena’s law enforcement agency launched the US’s “first all-electric police fleet,” according to its website.

The zero-emission line included a total of 20 Tesla vehicles — 10 Model Ys for patrol purposes and 10 Model 3s for detective and administrative duties — which were acquired in assistance with Enterprise Fleet Management.

In October 2024, the Bargersville Police Department in Indiana added 13 Tesla police cars to its existing fleet.

At the beginning of last year, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department received 10 Cybertrucks, donated by an anonymous supporter.

Later, in October, the city’s law enforcement agency unveiled 10 Tesla Cybertrucks for patrol use and to “carry tactical tools needed to assist the men and women of LVMPD on critical calls for service, such as barricades and shootings,” as stated on its website.

A month later, Carl Junction’s Police Department in Missouri added two Tesla Model Y patrol cars, one for the detective division and the other for patrol.

International Deployments

Tesla police vehicles have also spread internationally. Canada’s Bridgewater Police Service purchased the country’s first Tesla police car in 2022.

Dubai Police has been expanding its electric fleet aggressively, adding a Tesla Cybertruck, Zeekr 001, and Lotus Eletre SUV in early 2024, followed by a Lucid Air in October 2024.

In Europe, French police added several Tesla Model 3 vehicles to its fleet in November 2024.

A police department in Iceland has logged more than 1 million kilometers with an electric fleet made up mostly of Model Ys, according to DrivenTeslaCanada.
