Tesla VP Urges European Leaders to Embrace Supervised FSD Technology

Tesla‘s Vice President for Public Policy and Business Development Rohan Patel engaged on Thursday in an open discussion with Tesla enthusiasts on X regarding Tesla’s supervised Full Self Driving (FSD).

In an exchange about the technology, Patel enhanced that the recently updated regulations of Driver Control Assistance Systems in Europe are “encouraging”. However, he defended that they still “don’t address the key issue (system initiated maneuvers)” which would enable the “safety benefits of Tesla‘s FSD Supervised”.

The updated regulation in Europe will go into effect in the last quarter of the year but, in Patel’s opinion, leaders’ support from the tech, economic development and innovation is needed to allow European customers to use the technology from the world’s leading manufacturer.

“We could make some small improvements to the older versions of FSD, based on the updated DCAS regulations at the end of the year. But unless there is an updated allowance for “system initiated” maneuvers, the full benefits of systems such as Supervised FSD are not type approvable,” Rohan stated.

“The way the updated regulation works is that the driver would need to approve of almost every significant maneuver or set of maneuvers. Practically I’m not even sure how that might work or be designed, but it sounds like a massive pain/distraction for a driver – the opposite of the point of both the driver assistance and driver monitoring benefits of Supervised FSD,” he added.

Among the upgrades of Tesla’s new FSD version 12.3.3 — which was released on March 30th — drivers can notice upgrades regarding the autopark function, an improved driving visualization, charging, and others.
