Tesla UK Sales Plunge 62.1% in April to 512 Vehicles

Sales of Tesla vehicles in the UK fell 62.1% in April following the European-wide decline seen across major markets of the old continent.

The company sold 512 units in the UK last month, resulting in a market share of 0.43% and the lowest month in two years. A year ago, Tesla had registered 1,352 EVs in the market, which represented, back then, a market share of 1.01%

As in previous quarters, Tesla deliveries remained weighted toward the latter half of the quarter rather than the beginning.

However, registrations in April still trailed those in January, despite the company starting production of the refreshed Model Y that month. Tesla’s UK website indicates that deliveries of the updated Model Y are expected to begin in June.

Tesla registered 1,458 vehicles in the UK in January — nearly triple the figures recorded last month.

In other European markets, the company’s sales continued to post year over year declines. Tesla vehicle registrations in France fell 59.4% in April from a year earlier, marking the company’s fourth straight monthly decline. Year-to-date sales are down 44%, with 7,556 vehicles registered since the start of 2025.

In Sweden, Tesla sales plunged 80.7% to 203 units last month, the lowest monthly total since October 2022. In Denmark, Tesla registrations dropped 67.2% year-on-year. In the Netherlands, sales declined 73.8% to 382 units, down from 1,457 in April 2024.

In late March, Tesla delivered its 250,000th vehicle in the United Kingdom, 11 years after entering the market with its Model S sedan.

Tesla began UK deliveries of the Model S in 2014, with Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk personally handing over the first units. The company also opened its first UK Supercharger station that year in London.

Model 3 deliveries started in 2019, followed by the Model Y in 2022. The updated Model Y now has a recommended retail price ranging from £44,990 to £60,990, slightly higher than the previous version.

Sales of the Shenzhen-based carmaker BYD soared 654% in April to nearly 6,500 units. The company sells both battery electric and hybrid models in the UK.

Polestar saw its sales jump 82.8% year over year in April to 859 units. The Stellantis-backed Chinese brand Leapmotor sold 108 units.

Cláudio Afonso founded CARBA in early 2021 and launched the news blog EV later that year. Following a 1.5-year hiatus, he relaunched EV in April 2024. In late 2024, he also started AV, a blog dedicated to the autonomous vehicle industry.
