Tesla sales reached a new 2.5-year low in April with just 203 vehicles registered. Figures fell sharply both sequentially (77.7%) and year on year (80.7%) as the company had delivered 1,052 units in the country a year ago.
Official data was shared from Mobility Sweden this Friday and came along with an overall sales drop across Europe, caused by the Model Y revamp, negative public sentiment due to Elon Musk’s involvement in politics and growing competition.
In the Netherlands, Denmark and the UK, registrations sank more than 60%, with France registering a 59.3% decline in sales for the fourth consecutive month.
Competitors
The best-selling EV model in Sweden last month was Volkswagen‘s ID.7 sedan, which had nearly 1,000 vehicles sold. Volvo, the Swedish-based brand, completed the top three with its EX40 and EX30 SUVs, selling 640 and 547 units respectively.
Polestar — also owned by Geely Holding Group like Volvo — sees Sweden among its strongest markets. The Polestar 4 SUV sold 322 units, which alone surpassed Tesla’s numbers for the same period.
Chinese brands BYD and XPeng sold 54 and 98 units each. The premium brand Zeekr registered 82 vehicles, while its main competitor Nio only sold 2 units, a plunge of nearly 87% from a month earlier.
EV Adoption
Last month, 27,519 vehicles were sold in Sweden, from which 9,283 were battery electric vehicles — a 33.7% market share.
Hybrid models, which include plug-in hybrids, had about the same market share — 33.9% — with 9,328 units. In April, two in three cars sold in Sweden were electrified.
Q1 Results
Tesla sold 1,929 vehicles in the Swedish market from January 1 to March 31. The first quarter’s figures show a 55% decline year over year, from 4,309 EVs in April 2024.
Globally, the brand reported a drop in deliveries of nearly 12%, with an output of 336,000 vehicles in the first quarter. The figures were below Wall Street expectations, as were the financial results reported last week.
