Tesla registered 18,500 vehicles in China during the week of December 9-15, marking its third-highest weekly result this quarter, according to data shared by Chinese automaker Li Auto. The registrations included 12,870 Model Y and 5,582 Model 3 vehicles.

On the first day of December, Tesla extended its five-year, 0% interest loan offer in China for the Model 3 and Model Y until the end of the year. A week earlier, Tesla announced a 10,000 yuan ($1,370) discount on the Model Y, which can be combined with the 0% interest financing offer.

The latest figures represent a decline from the first week of December, when Tesla recorded 21,900 vehicle registrations. Quarter-to-date, Tesla’s registrations in China are up 10.5% from the previous quarter and 15.6% year-over-year.
Year-to-date, the company has registered 620,139 vehicles in China, a 7.7% increase compared to the same period in 2023, surpassing its total 2023 China registrations of 610,074 units. Official sales numbers indicate that 603,664 vehicles were sold in the country last year.
Earlier this Tuesday, Tesla VP Grace Tao commented on the social media platform Weibo the company’s efforts to reduce water usage at its Gigafactory in Shanghai.
“Currently, the water recycling rate for cooling systems at the Shanghai Gigafactory has reached 98%, with more than 400,000 tons of recycled water treated annually. The treated wastewater contains absolutely no Class I heavy metals,” Tesla’s executive wrote.
Grace Tao added that “reducing direct water usage during the manufacturing process has always been one of Tesla’s top research priorities” saying later in the post that Tesla’s global water consumption per vehicle “dropped to 2.48 cubic meters in 2023, saving more than 26% compared to the industry average” while citing recent public data.
In November, Tesla’s sales in China rose 15.5% month-over-month to 78,856 units, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). The Model Y was the second-best-selling electric vehicle in the country during the month, while the Model 3 ranked fourth.
Globally, Tesla has stated it “expects to achieve slight growth in vehicle deliveries in 2024,” and aims to deliver more than 500,000 vehicles in a single quarter for the first time.
