Tesla Sales in Sweden Drop 54% to 503 Units in May

Tesla‘s registrations dropped by more than half in Sweden last month, according to data shared by the Mobility Sweden association on Monday.

The U.S. brand sold 503 EVs, marking a 53.7% plunge from the 1,086 units registered in May 2024.

On the other hand, the figures showed a 147.8% surge from April — when the brand hit a 2.5-year low with just 203 vehicles sold.

Tesla’s sales also declined in several other European markets, falling 67% in France, 30.5% in Denmark, 36% in the Netherlands, and 19% in Spain.

In Norway, sales spiked 213% to 2,600 units.

Of the total 25,675 vehicles registered in Sweden last month, nearly 9,500 were battery electric vehicles (BEV). BEVs represented 36.9% of the market — meaning that 1 in every 3 vehicles sold was fully electric.

Hybrid vehicles, including plug-in hybrid models, accounted for 9,457 units sold, a 33.9% market share.

Tesla‘s Model Y accounted for 454 of the total 503 units sold by the brand in May, placing seventh across all powertrains and fifth among fully electric vehicles. The entry-level SUV’s prices begin at 554,990 SEK ($57,900).

The Model 3 sedan, which is priced from 484,990 SEK ($50,600), represented 48 units. The remaining unit sold by the brand was a Model X.

The luxury SUV is priced from 1,474,990 SEK, equivalent to $153,800. The Model S luxury sedan is also available in the Scandinavian market from 1,379,990 SEK — about $143,900.

In Sweden, the brand is offering a 0% interest rate for buyers of the new Model Y taking deliveries until June 30, and a 0.99% interest rate with the same conditions for clients purchasing the Model 3.

Unlimited free Supercharging and Premium Connectivity is also avaible for customers purchasing factory-ordered and pre-configured Model S and Model X vehicles, if manufactured after February 6.

Volvo was the best-selling brand in the country and claimed the first two spots in the list of best-selling models. The plug-in hybrid XC60 represented 1,580 units, while the brand registered 1,218 fully electric EX40s.

Tesla ranked twelfth among all brands, two places below Gothenburg-based Polestar, which sold 613 units last month — its best result year to date.

Premium brand Zeekr‘s sales surged 88.9% to 119 vehicles from May 2024. Its competitor Nio listed 2 units in Sweden last month — the same amount as April, and down from the 18 vehicles registered a year earlier.

XPeng registered 106 vehicles in May and China’s BYD sold 76 vehicles, a jump of 52% year over year.

Tesla Europe

The company has been testing its supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) system in Europe, which is “pending regulatory approval.”

Through a new amendment on regulation from the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the FSD is set to receive approval for use on European highways by late September.

The new rules apply only to highways that are physically separated from vehicles — which means that several features of the system will not be available to European customers yet.

As the supervised version of the FSD reaches global markets, Tesla is set to launch fully autonomous paid rides in Austin on June 12.
