Tesla Sales Hit New 2 Year High in Norway While Swedish Figures Slump

Tesla registrations in September showed contrasting trends across the Nordic countries.

Norway saw the company achieve its best result in two and a half years, while Swedish sales remain below 2024 levels.

The brand was the best-selling in both Norway and Iceland. On the island, 358 of the 1,069 passenger vehicles sold last month were Tesla models.

In Denmark, sales also rose by 20.4% year over year to 2,232 vehicles, according to data from bilstatistik reported by Reuters on Wednesday.

The Model Y represented 1,955 of the total and was the best-selling vehicle in the country.

Sales figures for Finland have not yet been released as of Wednesday morning.

In the Norwegian market, where EVs represented a record 98.3% of new vehicles, Tesla was the best-selling brand with 4,829 units sold, according to data published on Wednesday by OFV.

The figures represented not only a 60.2% surge month over month, as the third quarter came to an end, but also a 14.7% jump year over year.

Tesla achieved record registration numbers since March 2023, when it had sold 7,915 vehicles in the country.

The Model Y was also the best-selling model in the country, representing 4,132 of the total vehicles registered by the brand.

The Model 3 sedan accounted for 696 units, implying that the remaining unit was either a Model S or Model X — which are also available in the market.

In Norway, 14,329 vehicles were registered in September, of which 33.7% were Tesla‘s. The two best-selling companies after the US brand, Volvo and Volkswagen, reached 1,250 and 1,125 units, respectively.

The scenario changes in Sweden, where Volvo is headquartered.

In a total of 28,972 cars, 4,904 were Volvo‘s and 4,154 were Volkswagen‘s.

The country had a 35.9% market share of fully electric vehicles in September.

Tesla was the sixth best-selling brand across all powertrains, with 1,726 units. In the fully electric segment, however, it outperformed the first two ranked.

The figures represent a 721% surge month over month, as the US brand hit a new low in August with only 210 vehicles sold. It is also its best monthly result year to date.

However, the numbers are still below 2024’s results. Tesla‘s sales tumbled by 64% in September, compared to the same month a year before.

From January 1 to September 30, the EV maker sold 5,710 vehicles in the Scandinavian country — 65.3% below the 16,478 Tesla vehicles listed in the first nine months of 2024.

In mid-July, the company’s country chief Jens Stark announced that Tesla would be offering a trade-in bonus of SEK 40,000 ($4,200) for Swedes swapping their vehicle for a Tesla.

The offer applied to both the Model 3 and Model Y for orders placed by September 27 and delivered by September 30, a push aimed at lifting third-quarter delivery figures.

For customers buying a new Model 3 — in any variant — or Model Y Long Range All Wheel Drive (AWD), Tesla also offered a 0% variable financing rate.

The entry-level SUV’s prices in Sweden begin at 554,990 SEK ($58,100), while the Model 3 sedan is priced from 484,990 SEK ($50,800).

In September, Tesla sold 1,387 Model Ys, making it the second best-selling vehicle in the country, behind only Volvo‘s hybrid XC60. Additionally, 333 Model 3s were registered.

Tesla’s lineup in the country also includes the flagship Model S and Model X, but only inventory units are available, and none were sold in September.
