Tesla Rolls Out Major FSD Update with Neural Network Shift

Tesla began rolling out a significant update to its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software on Saturday, shifting the city-streets driving system to a single, end-to-end neural network model in FSD version 12.5.6.3.

Last week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company’s FSD technology “is now almost entirely AI.” In early October, Musk had stated that FSD “will soon exceed 10,000 miles between critical interventions, which is a year of driving for most people.”

The latest update represents a departure from traditional programming methods, replacing over 300,000 lines of C++ code with a neural network trained on millions of video clips, according to Tesla’s description of the release.

FSD version 12.5.6.3 introduces a vision-based attention monitoring system that functions with sunglasses and an end-to-end neural network on highways.

Tesla has also adjusted lane-changing algorithms to make “earlier and more natural” decisions. Speed profiles, which set driving speed based on road conditions, have been updated to apply to roads and highways with speed limits of 50 miles per hour (80 kilometers per hour) or higher.

Additionally, the Auto Set Speed feature, which automatically adjusts the vehicle’s speed, now defaults to the maximum allowed speed on the given road.

On Friday, Tesla said it is now offering one year of free supercharging to customers who buy and take delivery of the Model Y before the year-end. The revamped version of the bestselling car worldwide is expected to be unveiled early next year.

Tesla shares soared 8% to $322 on Friday marking their highest level in more than two years and a market cap of above $1 trillion.
