Tesla has started rolling out the xAI’s generative artificial intelligence chatbot Grok to its models in nine European countries, the company announced on Monday via X.
The nations include the UK, Ireland , Germany , Switzerland , Austria , Italy , France , Portugal , and Spain. Additional markets are expected to be added later.
In the 2026.2.6 software update, Tesla detailed Grok’s capabilities: “It can answer almost any question using real-time information and also add/edit navigation destinations to become your personal guide.”
Users can choose Grok’s voice and personality, with options ranging from “Storyteller” to “Unhinged,” according to Tesla‘s website.
The assistant can add and edit navigation destinations, find nearby Superchargers, or plan sightseeing tours. The feature requires Premium Connectivity or a WiFi connection.
Still in early beta, Grok does not yet support voice commands for car controls other than navigation.
“Grok can add and edit navigation destinations, becoming your personal guide. You can ask Grok to navigate to the best Thai restaurant near you, find a Supercharger within walking distance of a coffee shop, or even plan a romantic sightseeing tour. Requires Premium Connectivity or a WiFi connection,” the company mentioned.
Tesla advised users that, to launch Grok, they can open the App Launcher and select Grok, or long-press the voice button on the steering wheel after logging in to Grok. It also noted that they must set Grok’s personality to “Assistant” in order to enable Navigation Commands.
Still in early Beta, the latest update to the AI chatbot “does not support voice commands for car controls other than navigation,” while existing voice commands remain the same.
Background
Developed by xAI, Elon Musk’s AI company, Grok launched in November 2023.
Musk called it “the smartest AI in the world on the toughest tests” last August.
Tesla introduced Grok to the Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and Cybertruck in the US in July 2025.
The company said the feature may be extended to additional vehicles through over-the-air software updates.
In China, strict data localization rules prevent Tesla from using Grok.
The company instead partners with domestic AI providers ByteDance and DeepSeek for its in-car voice assistant.
ByteDance’s Doubao large language model handles voice commands including navigation, media playback, and temperature control, while DeepSeek’s model manages interactive AI conversations.
On Sunday, Musk wrote on X that Grok 4.20 will arrive this week, calling it “a significant improvement over 4.1” that is “starting to get open-form engineering questions right.”
