Tesla is reportedly seeing record numbers of test drive sign-ups across several stores in the U.S. after extending its test drive offer to 48 hours last week — for both existing owners and potential customers.
According to X user Sawyer Merritt, the company began on Friday allowing anyone in the U.S. to schedule a 48-hour test drive of the new Model Y and Model 3 directly online.
Previously, Tesla’s test drives took approximately 30 minutes.
“No prior invite needed,” Merritt wrote, later noting that “this is the first time Tesla’s allowed anyone in the US to book a 48-hour demo drive” comprising all its models.
The most influential Tesla enthusiast, who has nearly 900,000 followers on X, added that “some Tesla stores around the US are seeing a record amount of test drive signups, specifically with the 48-hour option.”
Merritt noted that several locations were already booked out for the next four weeks — especially for Cybertruck demos, given its more limited availability.
Meanwhile, Tesla owners in Canada received a notification last week via the Tesla app inviting them to a “48-hour experience in a new Tesla of your choice — including Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y or Cybertruck,” depending on vehicle availability.
Tesla launched the refreshed version of its Model Y in late January across the U.S., Canada and Europe. Deliveries in China started in March and it was the top-selling model in the country for the month.
The new Model Y is priced from $37,490 in the United States, when including the $7,500 Federal Tax credit — which is at risk of being removed by the year end.
The brand is currently offering 1.00% APR financing for 72 months for Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive buyers, until June 16.
The SUV was first launched in 2020 and became the world’s best-selling vehicle in 2023 and 2024. Last year, the brand revamped its Model 3 sedan, initially launched in 2017.
The model is currently priced from $34,990 when considering the Tax Credit. Tesla is currently offering 0% APR financing.
Tesla unveiled Cybertruck’s prototype in 2019, and the model was launched in late 2023, after being delayed from 2021. The model is currently priced from $62,490 in the U.S. or about $70,000 if excluding the Tax Credit.
Last week, Tesla expanded its trade-in program for the Cybertruck — meaning Cybertruck owners can trade them for a new (or used) Tesla vehicle. Previously, owners weren’t allowed to resell the vehicle for a year.
According to Business Insider, recent trade-in estimates on the Tesla app revealed that the Cybertruck quickly depreciated by over 30%.
It was also shown by Tesla-Info that Tesla currently holds about 10,000 Cybertrucks in inventory — which could mean about $800 million worth of the model.
According to Motor Intelligence, the brand sold 45,875 vehicles last month in the United States, down 3% year over year, but up 2.3% from the 44,835 units sold in March.
