Tesla‘s first showroom in India is set to be located in the Bandra Kurla Complex, a business centre in Mumbai, the country’s largest city.
The information was revealed on X by user mrjain, who shared pictures of the showroom under construction.
Although the logo was seen on the facade, it is currently covered during the renovations works.
“Confirmed with pics, the first @Tesla showroom in India is in BKC [Bandra Kurla Complex] on the ground floor of Maker Maxity 2 North Avenue,” the post said.
The BKC was also the location chosen by Apple to build its flagship store in the country.
The Indian government had said earlier this month that Tesla was set to open its first showrooms in the country — in Mumbai and New Delhi.
Last week, Bloomberg reported that the first Tesla models to arrive in the country are Model Y SUVs shipped from the Shanghai Gigafactory.
The model is expected to go on sale for more than $56,000 in the country, according to the media outlet. In the United States, the price starts at $44,990, excluding the EV tax credit.
Bloomberg had reported in February that the U.S. brand was shipping the first units to the country, intending to sell them in Mumbai, New Delhi, and Bangalore.
By that time, Tesla listed more than a dozen job openings in the country, including positions to staff showrooms and manage orders.
Chief executive Elon Musk had met with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington just a week before.
On April 19, the Indian PM stated on X that he and Musk “discussed the immense potential for collaboration in the areas of technology and innovation,” with Musk later saying that he was “looking forward to visiting India later this year.”
India imposes a duty of 110% on imported vehicles that cost more than $40,000 — which has led Tesla to hold back on plans to enter the country.
Despite lower tariffs on automakers manufacturing in India, Tesla‘s business in India is set to be import-only.
Earlier this month, as the Indian government announced guidelines to promote vehicle production in the country, its Minister of Heavy Industries confirmed that the Elon Musk-led brand is “not interested in manufacturing” in the country.
Tesla India has been directed by Prashanth Menon since March 2021. In May, Bloomberg reported that Menon had resigned from his position.
According to Menon’s LinkedIn profile, the country head worked at the company for over nine years.
The report said he established a local office in Pune and led efforts to secure Tesla‘s first showroom leases earlier this year.
