Tesla Model YL and Model 3+ Specs Revealed in MIIT Catalogue

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released a new catalogue on Friday, sharing new specs for Tesla’s upcoming versions of both the Model 3 and Model Y in China.

The models were initially revealed in a catalogue last month. The brand is preparing to launch a longer range trim of the Model 3 — named Model3+ — and the three-rowed, six seater Model Y L, which was also teased by the brand on Weibo.

The July catalogue said the models would feature batteries supplied by South-Korean company LG — which were also used in the five-seat iteration. The new filing discloses range figures and battery specs for both models.

The Model 3+ has an updated CTLC range of up to 830 km, and will be powered by a 78 kWh NMC battery.

The new sedan is a long range, rear-wheel-drive version with a single electric motor rated at 225 kilowatts, an upgrade from the 194 kW motor used in Tesla‘s existing RWD Model 3.

The six-seat SUV will be dual-motor, with peak power outputs of 142 kW for the front motor and 198 kW for the rear one.

The Model YL reaches a top speed of 201 km/h, has a range of 830 km and will be equipped with a 82kWh battery.

The YL model has joined the list of six-seat SUVs debuting in China this year, further heightening competition within the segment, including the Li Auto‘s Li i8 and the Onvo L90.

Onvo’s chief Fei Shen said last month that, as “the six-seat SUV market is getting very lively in the second half of the year,” with “more and more pure electric six-seaters” being announced, “everyone’s competing on user value and experience.”

Last month, Tesla sold 40,617 vehicles in China, a 12.1% decline from the same period a year ago, when it registered 46,227 units.

Compared to June, figures dropped by 33.9%, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

July was Tesla‘s highest first month of the quarter since the third quarter of 2024, a year ago.

Including exports, Tesla wholesale registrations in July reached 67,886 units. The numbers were down 8.4% from 74,117 units in the same period last year and declined 5.2% from 71,599 units in June.

From those, 45,838 vehicles were Model Ys and 22,048 were Model 3s.

Sales from the SUV dropped by 10% both sequentially and year over year. The refreshed Model Y was the third best-selling vehicle in China last month, down from the first position in June.

Compared to June, Model 3 sales dipped by 8.4%, and tumbled 32.6% from the same period last year.

From July 28 to August 3, Tesla was the third best-selling NEV brand in China (after BYD and Geely‘s Galaxy) with 11,020 EVs — slightly up from the prior week’s 10,600 units.
