Tesla’s Model Y has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the best-selling new energy vehicle (NEV) in China for the first half of the year.
The Model Y, which was the best-selling car globally last year, saw its sales in China rise from 203,900 units in the first half of 2023 to 207,817 units this year.
In June alone, Tesla China sold a total of 71,007 vehicles, including 11,746 units for export, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

This means the US electric vehicle (EV) maker sold 59,261 vehicles domestically in June, marking a 20.15 percent decrease from 74,212 units sold in the same month last year. However, this figure represents a 7.33 percent increase from the 55,215 units sold in May.
The model has been included in the latest Chinese Government’s procurement list for electric vehicles. This inclusion was part of the newly published “Framework Agreement Procurement of EVs for Jiangsu Province Government for 2024-2025,” marking the first time Tesla has been featured in a government procurement catalog in China.
Tesla’s performance has also been notable in South Korea, where the Model Y sold 10,041 units in the first half of the year. This sales figure is almost four times higher than the previous year and has surpassed German premium OEMs, including BMW’s 5 Series with 10,024 units and Mercedes-Benz’s E-Class with 8,916 units.
Earlier this week, a wrapped Tesla Model Y was seen in north of Los Angeles as the chief executive Elon Musk reiterates that the new version will not arrive this year. Codenamed “Juniper,” the revamped version is expected to be launched in early 2025.
In response to a Subscription-limited post on X, Elon Musk addressed the rumors asking Sawyer Merritt, the most influential Tesla content creator, to stop teasing that a new version will hit the market before the year end.
“There is no new Model Y this year. Please stop hinting that there is, as it damages our sales of the current version,” Musk wrote, reacting to Sawyer Merritt’s post suggesting that anticipation for a refreshed version could negatively impact Model Y sales in the coming months.

Last month, Elon Musk had already said on X that the revamped version will not be launched this year without unveiling when can customers can expect it.
“No Model Y “refresh” is coming out this year. I should note that Tesla continuously improves its cars, so even a car that is 6 months newer will be a little better,” Elon Musk wrote on X.
Tesla is expected to give the revised Model Y a similar exterior makeover to the refreshed Model 3. This overhaul will likely feature a completely new face incorporating slimmer headlights. Following the updates to the Model 3, the new Model Y is set to adopt a cleaner, more aerodynamic design.
