Onvo L60 Achieves 12 kWh/100 km Energy Consumption, Surpassing the Tesla Model Y

Unveiled last May, the first model from Nio’s sub-brand Onvo will start being delivered in China later this month.

With its final price still unknown, the L60 has been available for preorder with a starting price of 219,900 yuan, about 10 per cent lower than the Tesla Model Y, its main competitor.

With a CLTC energy efficiency of 92.3 per cent and “the world’s lowest drag coefficient of 0.229 for a production SUV,” Nio said the model had an energy consumption of 12.1 kWh per 100 km. However, real world test with the first production unit shows it might be even lower.

In a post on the Onvo App, the brand shared that, after driving the first 12,962 kms across China, the first vehicle produced has achieved an energy consumption of 12.0 kWh per 100 kilometers.

In a ranking of the most efficient EVs in China published by local media outlet Sina Auto, the model claimed the top spot, while the Model Y followed with 12.5 kWh per 100 km.

The recently launched updated version of the Zeekr 008 sedan ranked third place. The 2025 revamped version allows the battery to charge from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in ten and a half minutes with prices starting at 209,900 yuan — equivalent to $29,580.

Avatr 11, the SUV of the electric vehicle (EV) joint venture formed by Huawei, Changan Automobile, and battery maker CATL, achieved fourth place with 13.5 kWh.

Among the eight most efficient EVs, German carmakers had two models on the list: the Audi Q4 e-tron, which ranked fifth with 14.4 kWh per 100 km, and the BMW iX3, which ranked seventh with 16.7 kWh per 100 km.

As exclusively reported by EV in early August, the launch event is scheduled for September 19, a date confirmed by Li at the earnings conference call earlier this month,

Alan Ai, Nio’s VP and Head of the sub-brand Onvo, stated in an interview earlier this week that the battery of the L60 is designed to support over 10,000 swaps over its lifetime.

With most drivers in China swapping the battery of the car an average of twice per week, the battery has a theoretical lifespan of 100 years.

With a pre-sale price of 219,900 yuan ($31,000), all eyes are now on the launch event, where the final price will be revealed.

Onvo’s President, Alan Ai, said in late May that the brand is developing six-seat and seven-seat models aimed at larger families.
