Mazda to Adopt Tesla’s Charging Standard in Japan from 2027

Japanese carmaker Mazda Motor said on Friday it will adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) for battery electric vehicles launched in Japan beginning in 2027, expanding a previous agreement covering North America.

The move will give Mazda’s future EV customers in Japan access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, the company said, adding that BEVs will remain compatible with other charging standards via adapters.

Mazda first announced in January 2025 that it would equip BEVs sold in North America with NACS ports starting in 2025. Mazda is expected to launch EVs equipped with Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) in North America starting this year.

The automaker said earlier this year it plans to limit spending on electrification by leveraging partnerships and existing production facilities, aiming to offset cost pressures from inflation. It expects to maintain total investment at around 1.5 trillion yen ($10.02 billion) through 2030.

Last month, South Korea’s Kia criticized recent vandalism targeting Tesla Superchargers, calling the infrastructure “critical” as it officially joined the U.S. charging network.

Kia electric vehicle owners equipped with Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, or using a compatible adapter, now have access to the Supercharger network, nearly doubling their available fast-charging options.
