China’s weekly insurance registration data for the period of October 14 to 20, released on Tuesday, showed BYD continued to lead with 89,600 new energy vehicles registered.
The figures dropped 15.6% from the second week of October where the Shenzhen-based manufacturer reached a new record of 106,200 NEVs in one week.
Tesla registered 13,900 vehicles in China during the third week of October, up from 8,500 in the previous week. Between October 14 and 20, Tesla registered 12,900 Model Y and 300 Model 3.
Year to date, the company led by Elon Musk has registered 483,887 vehicles in the country. In 2023, Tesla sold 610,074 EVs in the country, up from 440,793 units in 2022.

Li Auto registered 12,100 units last week, down 9.7% from the 13,400 vehicles recorded in the second week of October.
The Beijing-headquartered NEV maker, which is preparing to launch its second battery electric (BEV) model in the first half of 2025, reached a new record of 14,200 units just before China’s National Holiday.
XPeng saw its weekly registrations in China reaching a new record of 6,300 units registered in the last week of September, marking the first time the company sold over 5,000 units in a week.

In the first week of October, registrations dropped to 2,800 units and have been climbing since then. Between October 14 and 20, the EV maker recorded 4,500 units, up 15.4% from the previous week.
The figures include 2,300 M03, 1,130 G6, 400 G9 SUvs and 330 units of the MPV model X9.
In September, XPeng delivered 10,000 units of its recently launched Mona M03 model and a total of 21,352 units representing a new record and a 39 percent growth from a year ago.
Nio registrations, which do not include the sub-brand Onvo, dropped 17% in the third week of October to 3,900 units.
Xiaomi reached a new weekly record with 5,600 units insured after producing 1,000 units in just one day, as the chief executive Lei Jun announced last week.
Geely’s premium EV brand Zeekr registered 5,200 vehicles and Leapmotor, which is part of the Stellantis group, recorded 8,000 units. The brand has unveiled its new model B10 at the Paris Auto Show last week as it continues its expansion to the European market via Stellantis network.
