China’s Weekly NEV Registrations: Tesla 10.2k, Nio 4.2k, BYD 95.6k, and More

China’s weekly insurance registration data for the period of October 21 to 27, released on Tuesday, showed BYD continued to lead with 95,600 new energy vehicles registered — up from 89,600 in the third week of October.

Earlier this month, the Shenzhen-based company reached a new record of 106,200 NEVs in one week as it prepares to surpass 3.5 million vehicles sold this year.

In September, BYD sold 164,956 passenger battery electric vehicles (BEV), a growth of about 9.1% from a year ago. Sales of Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV) continued to increase and reached 252,647 units.

Tesla’s registrations declined 2,700 units, or about 20%, to 10,500 vehicles in the fourth week of October. The figures include 9,700 Model Y and 800 units of the Model 3.

Year to date, the company led by Elon Musk has registered 493,987 vehicles in the country. In 2023, Tesla sold 610,074 EVs in China, up from 440,793 units in 2022.

Li Auto registrations fell 6.6% week over week from 12,100 units to 11,300 units. The company’s rival Aito, another premium SUV-oriented NEV brand, maintained its performance and registered 8,700 units for the second consecutive week.

Five weeks ago, the company reached a new record of 14,200 units in a single week. The Beijing-headquartered NEV maker, which is preparing to launch its second battery electric (BEV) model in the first half of 2025.

XPeng registered 5,500 units — up 22% week over week — as the production ramp up of its Mona M03 model continues. The brand delivered, for the first time in its history, over 5,000 units in one week.

In the first week of October, registrations dropped to 2,800 units and have been climbing since then. Between October 21 and 21, the EV increased its registrations for the fourth consecutive week.

The figures include 2,780 M03 (up from 2,300), 1,520 units of the G6 model, 380 G9 SUvs and 310 units of the MPV model X9, down from 330 in the third week of the month.

In September, XPeng delivered 10,000 units of its recently launched Mona M03 model and a total of 21,352 vehicles in September representing a new record and a 39 percent growth from a year ago.

Nio registrations, which do not include the figures from its sub-brand Onvo, increased 22% in the fourth week of October to 4,200 units — up from 3,900 in the previous week.

Zeekr, another premium EV brand, saw its registrations decline by 100 units to 5,100 vehicles.

Xiaomi reached a new weekly record with 5,700 units insured (up from 5,600 in the previous week) after producing 1,000 units in just one day. The brand is targeting 20,000 units delivered this month.

Stellantis brand Leapmotor registered 8,500 units, up from 8,000 vehicles in the third week of October. The brand unveiled its new model B10 at the Paris Auto Show earlier this month as it continues its expansion to the European market via the Stellantis network.
