China’s weekly insurance registration data for the period of Sept. 30 to October 6, released on Tuesday, showed BYD continued to lead with 67,600 electric vehicle (EV) registrations, down from its all-time record of 105,800 units in the previous week.

Tesla registered 1,800 vehicles, marking one of its weakest sales performances in months. Similar to BYD, this followed a record high of 22,600 units in the previous week.

The big gap between the two weeks was caused by China’s National Day holiday which took place between the first day of October and the 7th which caused disruptions to vehicle deliveries and insurance registrations.

Year to date, Tesla has sold 462,087 vehicles in China. In 2023, Tesla sold 610,074 EVs in the country.

Li Auto registered 8,700 units between September 30 and October 6 after having reached a new record of 14,200 units just before China’s National Holiday.

Guangzhou-headquartered XPeng faced a similar scenario with a record of 6,300 units registered in the last week of September, marking the first time the company sold over 5,000 units in a week.

In the first week of October, registrations dropped to 2,800 units. XPeng delivered 21,352 electric vehicles in September representing a new record and a 39 percent growth from a year ago.

Nio recorded 6,100 units in the last week of September, representing a 64.9 percent growth from the previous week. In the first week of October, the company led by William Li recorded 4,500 units.

As Nio’s sub-brand Onvo began deliveries of its debut model, the L60, in late September, it remains unclear whether the registration figures reported by Li Auto combine both Nio and Onvo sales.

Aito recorded 4,600 units and Xiaomi 3,800. Geely’s premium brand Zeekr registered 3,700 vehicles and Leapmotor, which is part of the Stellantis group, sold 3,500 vehicles.

The brand has recently expanded to the European markets and will debut a new model at the Paris Auto Show early next week.
