China’s weekly insurance registration data for October 28 to November 3, released on Tuesday, showed BYD maintaining its lead among new energy vehicle (NEV) makers with 96,300 units registered, a 0.8% increase from 95,600 in the prior week.

The Shenzhen-based automaker delivered over 500,000 NEVs in October, surpassing the half-million mark for the first time and is on track to close 2024 with over 4 million units sold.

Tesla’s registrations rose 49.5% from the previous week to 15,700 vehicles, comprising 11,300 Model Y and 4,300 Model 3 units. The company’s October sales in China, including exports, totaled 68,280 units, a 22.7% decline from September’s 88,321 and down 5.3% year-over-year.

Onvo, the sub-brand of Nio, saw 1,300 registrations for the week, up from 1,200 the previous week. Nio itself recorded 4,400 units, reflecting a 4.4% week-over-week rise.

Li Auto registrations increased by about 1% to 11,400 units after having dropped in the third week of October. The company’s rival Aito also saw a slight decline in weekly registrations from 8,700 to 8,400 premium SUVs.

XPeng registered 5,400 units, down 4% or 200 units, as it continues the production ramp up of its Mona M03 model. The brand delivered 21,352 vehicles in September and 23,917 in October, a 20% increase from the previous year.

After surpassing Nio last Friday, the company led by Xiaopeng He now ranks as the third most valuable Chinese EV company listed in the U.S., following Tesla and Li Auto in a ranking that excludes non-U.S. listed companies such as BYD or Xiaomi.

Xiaomi figures dropped about 46% to 3,100 units after having delivered over 20,000 units in October for the first time in its “short EV history.”

Zeekr registrations climbed 14% week over week from 5,100 to 5,800 vehicles.
