The weekly insurance registration data for China, covering the period from September 16 to 22, was released on Tuesday, revealing BYD’s continued market dominance with 80,600 electric vehicle (EV) sales, a 6.3 per cent decline from the 86,000 units sold the previous week.
The sales breakdown shows that BYD’s total sales reached 83,140 units, with the Dynasty + Ocean series contributing 80,550 units, and models like Denza, Fangchengbao, and Yangwang adding 1,370, 1,160, and 60 units, respectively.

Wuling secured second position with 15,500 units sold, representing a decrease of 1.9 per cent.
Tesla came in third with 13,800 units, with a detailed model breakdown showing Model Y sales at 8,720 units and Model 3 sales at 5,050 units.
The brand’s quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) growth is up 19.9 per cent, with year-over-year (YoY) growth rising by 18.5 per cent.
Compared to Q4 2023, this quarter reflects an increase of 1.1 per cent, marking it as the second-best quarter in the past 12 weeks. Tesla’s year-to-date (YTD) growth stands at +2.0 per cent YoY.
Li Auto ranked fourth, selling 12,000 units, down 4.8 per cent from 12,600 units the previous week. This includes 5,270 units of the L6, 3,090 units of the L7, 1,750 units of the L8, 1,760 units of the L9, and 170 units of the MEGA.
Trailing Li Auto, Aito, part of Huawei’s HarmonyOS EV lineup, achieved sales of 7,270 units, reflecting a significant drop of 23.8 per cent from last week’s 9,600 units.

Their lineup includes 3,400 units of the M7 and 3,010 units of the M9 EREV, along with smaller contributions from the M9 BEV and M5 series.
Stellantis-backed Leapmotor followed closely with 6,300 units, down 20.3 per cent from 7,900 units. Aion’s sales reached 5,700 units, down 27.0 per cent from 7,800 units.
Zeekr sold 3,790 units, down 19.1 per cent from 4,700 units, with the 001 model leading at 1,620 units.
In the latest market data, Nio recorded sales of 3,700 units, down 11.9 per cent from 4,200 units the previous week, while XPeng reported 3,500 units, a decrease of 18.6 per cent from 4,300 units sold the week prior, which included 1,790 units of the Mona M03.
Meanwhile, as a newcomer to the new energy vehicle (NEV) sector, Xiaomi sold 2,900 units last week, reflecting a decline of 6.45 per cent compared to 3,100 units sold the previous month.
Other luxury brands include Audi with 11,100 units, Mercedes-Benz with 10,100 units, and BMW with 8,400 units.
