Stellantis has applied to rejoin the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) after leaving the organization at the end of 2022, the association said on Saturday. The return comes less than a week after the departure of the group’s CEO Carlos Tavares.

Stellantis announced in mid-2022 that it would leave ACEA by the year-end, citing the need to develop its own strategy in response to tightening emissions standards and the rapid transition to electric vehicles. At the time, the company that owns brands such as Fiat, Maserati, and Jeep argued that it could better address emerging industry challenges independently, rather than within the association’s collective framework.

In a statement, ACEA’s President and CEO of Renault Group Luca de Meo said the return of Stellantis is “welcomed” as European manufacturers

“ACEA welcomes the application from Stellantis to rejoin the association. Given Europe’s unprecedented competitiveness crisis and collective need to master the challenges of the green transformation, it is more important than ever to stand united. ACEA members may be competitors on the market, but they all share the same goal: a competitive and sustainable transition to zero-emission mobility, in a Europe that can stand its ground globally. This we will continue working on with full drive and commitment,” Luca de Meo stated.

Last week, Stellantis’ Senior Independent Director, Henri de Castries, noted that “different views have emerged” in recent weeks, ultimately leading to Tavares’ resignation. On the same day, the group reaffirmed the guidance it had issued on October 31, 2024, regarding its full-year 2024 results.
