China’s SAIC Launches World’s Largest Car Carrier with 9,500-Vehicle Shipment

SAIC Motor Corp’s logistics arm Anji Logistics has officially launched what it says is the world’s largest vehicle carrier, named Anji Ahnsheng, which departed on its maiden voyage to Europe on Thursday.

The vessel, which can transport up to 9,500 vehicles, surpasses BYD’s Shenzhen carrier, launched in April, which has a maximum capacity of over 7,000 vehicles.

At 219 meters long and 37.7 meters wide, the BYD Shenzhen had previously ranked as the largest new energy vehicle (NEV) carrier.

SAIC said the Anji Ahnsheng is now the largest globally in terms of size, offers the strongest loading capacity, and is the most energy-efficient among RoRo vessels currently in operation.

With the addition of its latest vessel, Anji Logistics now operates China’s largest self-managed vehicle shipping fleet, consisting of 35 ships, including 11 river vessels, nine domestic sea vessels, and 15 dedicated to international trade.

The company plans to expand its international deep-sea fleet to 22 vessels by 2026, targeting key export markets including Western Europe, the Mediterranean, Mexico, South America’s Pacific coast, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Middle East.

The launch comes as Chinese automakers accelerate global expansion. SAIC said it will introduce 17 new vehicle models overseas over the next three years, including SUVs, sedans, MPVs, and pickup trucks.

China’s automotive exports hit a record 6.4 million units in 2024, maintaining its position as the world’s largest vehicle exporter.

The Port of Shanghai handled 3.63 million vehicles last year, up 15% from 2023, making it the top automotive port globally by volume.
