Rivian US Sales Hit 3-Year Low as January Deliveries Fall 18%

Sales estimates published by Motor Intelligence on Tuesday showed that Rivian‘s US registrations fell to a three year low in January.

The EV maker founded and led by RJ Scaringe is preparing to start customer deliveries of its R2 model “by June” while seeking to boost demand for its R1 models after the expiration of the $7,500 EV Tax Credit last September.

Rivian sold 2,516 vehicles in the United States last month, representing a 17.8% decline from the same period a year ago and a record low since the first few months of 2023.

Compared with December, when 3,606 vehicles were registered, sales dropped 30.2%, partly reflecting the usual seasonal weakness at the start of each year.

January figures extended the year-over-year decline that started in December.

This followed positive results in October and November — months when sales remained above the prior year, even after the EV tax credit expired on September 30.

Rivian sold a total of 42,247 vehicles in 2025, a decline of 12.5% from 2024, when 51,579 units were registered.

During January, the company offered a 0% APR rate on financing contracts of the R1S and R1T Dual models, if choosing the Large or Max battery pack or the Performance Upgrade, as well as Tri-motor options.

The offer was now extended, applying to Quad trims as well — marking the first time the company applies such discounts on its quad-motored vehicles.

Portfolio

The company’s portfolio currently includes the R1S SUV, priced from $76,990, and the R1T pickup truck, which begins at $72,990.

Additionally, the EV maker offers an electric delivery van for fleet customers.

Rivian is preparing to begin production of the R2, for which deliveries are expected to begin in June.

The company’s outlook hinges on the success of the mid-size SUV, which will let Rivian enter a more affordable segment and, through that, increase demand for its vehicles.

This Monday, the EV maker appointed Michael Schwaeble as Vice President of Logistics. He will oversee supply chain operations.

Last month, the EV maker named Greg Revelle as Chief Customer Officer to oversee the customer journey, leading go-to-market strategy, including sales, marketing, and operations.

Revelle will also lead marketing operations after CEO RJ Scaringe said in October that the company was seeking a Chief Marketing Officer.

After enthusiasm for autonomy-related news led its stock to a 2025 high of $22.69 on December 22, Rivian shares have declined to a new two-month low, closing at $14.44 on Monday.

Rivian shares closed 0.2% lower on Tuesday at $14.41

Sales per Model

Neither Rivian nor Motor Intelligence disclose sales per model; however, Cox Automotive’s Kelley Blue Book EV Sales Report, published by the end of each quarter, does.

According to EV sales data released earlier this year, Rivian sold 24,852 R1S units in 2025, a 7.7% decline from the prior year, while R1T registrations tanked 33.1% to 7,416 from 11,085 units.

Rivian EDV sales plunged 26.8% in 2025, with 9,830 vehicles registered by year-end.

Most of them were delivered to Amazon, to which the Irvine-based company committed to delivering 100,000 vans by 2030.

US Market in January

Last month, J.D. Power analysts predicted a decline in EV and PHEV sales in the US, driven by larger incentives for gasoline-powered vehicles, ongoing profit pressure from tariffs, and the continued slowdown in EV sales following the end of the $7,500 federal tax credit last September.

Among pure EV makers, Tesla led with an estimated 40,100 vehicles sold in January, down 17% from December, while Lucid posted 1,700 registrations, more than doubling its year-ago figure on a 156% year-over-year surge.

The Saudi-backed EV maker’s gains came despite a 30% sequential drop from December’s revised figure of 2,415 units, a pattern consistent with the seasonal slowdown that typically hits the auto industry early in the year.

Geely-backed Polestar saw its sales decline year over year for the seventh straight month, with 280 vehicles registered.
