U.S. sales of the electric vehicle maker Rivian have fallen 39% year over year to 3,060 units in January, according to Motor Intelligence estimates released on Monday.

The Irvine-based EV manufacturer, which currently sells its vehicles in the U.S. and Canada, plans to expand to Europe in 2025 with its upcoming R2 model. In January 2024, the company sold 5,027 vehicles in the U.S.

In total, Rivian delivered 14,183 electric vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2024, up 41.6% sequentially from the 10,018 units shipped in the previous quarter about 2% higer year over year.

In January, Ford’s U.S. sales dropped 6% to 135,506 vehicles while GM posted a 19% increase with nearly 194,000 vehicles registered — including ICE, fully electric and hybrid models.

Tesla’s registrations dropped 10% to 48,500 units as the company prepares to start deliveries of the refreshed Model Y in March.

The Saudi-backed EV startup Lucid Motors posted a 51% growth with 665 vehicles which included the very first Gravity SUVs delivered to the company’s employees and friends. Customer deliveries are planned to start soon with no official date revealed by the carmaker.

Rivian produced 12,727 vehicles in the last quarter of the year, down from 13,157 in the third quarter. In 2024, the EV maker produced a total of 49,476 units, about 500 units above the high end of the recently lowered guidance.

In October last year, the company noted it was grappling with a production disruption caused by a shortage of a shared component affecting both its R1 and RCV platforms.

On Friday, the company said that “the previously discussed shortage of a shared component on the R1 and RCV platforms is no longer a constraint on Rivian’s production.”

Rivian miscalculated its supply and demand requirements with Essex Furukawa, its sole supplier of copper wires used in the EV motors, according to Bloomberg. The report mentions that the supplier redirected its resources to other customers after Rivian’s demand signals fell short.

Following the constraint, the company lowered its 2024 production guidance, reducing its output target from 57,000 vehicles to a range of 47,000 to 49,000 units.
