Rivian will release its Kick Turn feature for second-generation Quad motor vehicles “this week,” Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid announced Monday, delivering on functionality first teased when the high-performance variant launched in July.
The EV maker first previewed a similar capability called ‘Tank Turn’ in 2019.
Rivian later delayed the rollout indefinitely without explanation. Earlier this year, the feature was planned for September, but was pushed back before this week’s scheduled release.
“Kick Turn! Available this week with the .46 OTA update on Rivian Gen 2 #Quad,” Bensaid wrote on X, without specifying a concrete release date.
The feature allows drivers to precisely control power and tire grip to rotate the vehicle around its center, even while in motion.
The system adjusts power to the inside wheels — slowing or reversing them — to enable smooth rotation. Drivers can use Kick Turn with stability control fully engaged, reduced, or disabled.
Rivian first confirmed the capability at its July launch event for the Quad motor variants, which pack 1,025 horsepower from four in-house electric motors and represent the Irvine, California-based company’s most powerful offerings.
The Quad R1T starts at $117,885 and the R1S at $125,990, both including destination charges.
The .46 software release will also include a customizable driver display for both first- and second-generation R1 vehicles, Bensaid said last week.
Digital key support will arrive with the same update, though that feature is limited to Gen 2 vehicles due to hardware constraints, he said earlier this month.
The improvements come as some owners have reported frustration with persistent software bugs in Rivian‘s operating system.
Separately, Evercore ISI said earlier this Monday that Rivian‘s AI & Autonomy Day event last week was “headed in the right direction” but offered little that was materially different from competitors or Wall Street expectations.
