Rivian Shows R2 SUV Testing Water Crossings Ahead of 2026 Launch [Video]

Rivian on Wednesday released video footage of its forthcoming R2 SUV negotiating a water crossing at one of its proving grounds, as part of the brand’s continued focus on durability testing.

The video comes as Rivian produces “hundreds” of “production-intent builds” for the R2 model, which it says are undergoing real-world testing and final validation.

Rivian has stated that its testing regime includes fording water in both “clean and muddy conditions” across varying depths, with the objective of assessing component resilience and system integrity under stress.

The company also uses advanced simulations to model the effects of deep-water crossings on structural and mechanical systems.

When launched, Rivian’s R1T pickup was marketed with a 39-inch (≈1 m) maximum wading depth. For R2, Rivian has not yet confirmed an equivalent spec.

On its website, Rivian sets out guidelines for drivers — e.g. entering water at a steady, low speed (under ~5 mph), being wary of cross-currents and hidden debris, and verifying firm ground at ingress and egress points.

After exiting water, Rivian recommends drivers clear the horn, clean the heat exchanger, test brakes, and wash surfaces to remove debris. It also warns that the vehicles are not designed for prolonged submersion.

The R2 is slated for production in the first half of 2026 at Rivian’s plant in Normal, Illinois, with a base price target of approximately $45,000.

Analysts such as Cantor Fitzgerald’s Andres Sheppard have flagged that Rivian may first launch higher-trim versions even though the base price goal is $45,000.

According to Chief Financing Officer Claire McDonough on the latest earnings call, Rivian expects the R2 to cost less than “half as much per unit to produce as the R1 line.”

In an interview with CNBC, Rivian’s founder and CEO RJ Scaringe reaffirmed that the R2 will be “a global product,” with “world-class technology,” which will be produced in the US.
