Rivian Revives R2T Trademark, Signaling Pickup Variant of Mid-Size SUV

Rivian has successfully revived its ‘R2T’ trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, suggesting the electric vehicle maker may still plan to release a pickup truck variant of its upcoming R2 SUV.

The trademark revival was first spotted by Rivian owner and brand enthusiast Chris Hilbert, who shared the news on X.

From Abandoned to Active

The R2T trademark was originally filed by Rivian IP Holdings LLC in May 2022 and published in August 2023.

However, it was marked as abandoned on October 14 after the company failed to file a required Statement of Use or request an extension within six months of the Notice of Allowance.

On October 28, Rivian filed a petition to revive the trademark, which the USPTO approved just one day later.

As of Friday, the application status shows “revived and is awaiting further action.”

Expanding Beyond the R2 SUV

The R2T would represent Rivian‘s entry into the mid-size pickup segment, complementing the R2 SUV unveiled in March 2024 and scheduled to start being produced in the first half of 2026.

While Rivian‘s current lineup includes the R1S SUV and R1T pickup—both priced above $70,000—the R2 platform targets a more affordable price point starting around $45,000.

However, Rivian is expected to release a higher-priced R2 trim first, followed by the more affordable base version later.

Performance Variants on the Horizon

Beyond a potential pickup variant, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has hinted at additional R2 derivatives, including a performance-oriented ‘R2X’ version.

“It doesn’t take a huge amount of imagination to think of what comes next — if there’s R2, what are the other R2 variants?” Scaringe told InsideEVs in an August interview.

“We sort of hinted at that with R3, where we did an R3X. You could imagine X versions; you could imagine other versions.”

When Rivian unveiled the R2 in March 2024, it simultaneously introduced the smaller R3 crossover and its R3X performance variant.

Production Timeline

Order books for the R2 are expected to open in early 2026, with production beginning at Rivian‘s main manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois.

The company’s upcoming Georgia plant is slated to support production of both R2 and R3 models when operations commence in late 2027, providing additional capacity as Rivian scales its more affordable vehicle lineup.
